£400 energy payment

can I just get it applied to my gas as that’s what I use the most and with having a 2 year old the winter I need heating up

also I pay my gas with a card in the meter in my garden so how does that work ?

thanks. X

It is being applied to electricity accounts / credit to meter if on payment meters. The reason is that everyone has electricity but not everyone has gas.
It makes no difference really if you are being credited £400 to your electricity then you won't have to put as much on it so can use the money that you would have spent towards your gas.

So will i not get a choice ? That’s not fair I would like it on what I use more of and that’s gas for heating and hot water x

Given the number of payments they will have to make to millions of households they are likely to just simplify it. No you likely wont get a choice.

Are your gas and electricity not supplied by the same company?

BarbaraofSeville · 19/06/2022 14:47

You just use the money you don't spend on electricity to spend on gas instead.

It all works out the same in the end, it would cost a fortune to ask everyone which account they wanted the money credited to and it makes no difference to most people.

Moonchair1 · 19/06/2022 15:09

@Babyroobs no don’t have gas and electric with same company

LadyCatStark · 19/06/2022 15:13

It’s free money. Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth! You will spend more than £400 on electricity over winter anyway I’m sure.

Is every household getting a £400 payment to their gas/electrcity account?

Not gas, electricity

Google it to get the full details, it was announced a little while back

I don't see why it matters, you will be £400 better off, that's the important think isn't it?

LakieLady · 20/06/2022 08:13

Do you pay for your electricity by direct debit? If so, and you are in credit when the money hits your electricity account, I'd ask for a refund so you can use the money to top up your gas meter through the winter. Ime, when you have both, the amount spent on gas varies more than the amount spent on electricity. My electricity use isn't much different in the summer from the winter, but the gas shoots up once I start having the heating on.

They may be awkward about it, especially if you have different suppliers for both, but it's your money at the end of the day.

Assuming that you spend more than £400 on electricity and more than £400 on gas, it makes no difference where the government money goes.
£400 is £400..It doesn't magically have more value against a higher bill.

BarbaraofSeville · 20/06/2022 08:43

Plus the electricity standing charge is about £170 a year anyway, so even if you're a low electricity user, the standing charge alone will use it up quite quickly.

CeeJay81 · 20/06/2022 09:26

@LakieLady I have dual fuel with eon. I pay just one direct debit for both. If I'm in £400 plus in credit on the account by October, which I should be cause im over paying, how will it work. I'd love for me to then be £800 in credit but if its just for electric will it work that way. If I'm in lots of credit with electric but owe gas, will they just take it from electric credit? or will I be expected to still pay gas.

Moonchair1 · 20/06/2022 09:47

I don’t pay direct debt it’s a meter in my garden I put card in when I’ve topped cars up at shop

It’s more than fair. It’s £400 worth of fair. Hmm

NewBootsAndRanty · 20/06/2022 22:59

If you're woth the same.supplier for gas and electricity, you can just ask them to transfer the credit between the two accounts. If you're with separate suppliers, ask your electricity supplier to transfer the credit to your bank account, then you can just pay it onto your gas account.
