I think you can just go in and get one.
They will charge you for it though

DavidTennantsMistress · 14/01/2008 20:52

no will they how much do they charge? (I didn't realise that) the letting agents are going to charge me 3% to pay on my card - so if it's more than that I might as well pay the extra and use my card.

I vaguely remember ringing my bank years ago for a bankers draft but I had to go into another bank to actually get it since I was with First Direct at the time - no branches! I had to pay £10 for it as well.

bookwormmum · 14/01/2008 20:55

It might say on the back of your statements how much they take you for charge.

whoops · 14/01/2008 20:58

I think it is about £10-£15 I think
Is that a 3% charge for a debit card payment or Credit card payment? Where I work we only charge the extra for a credit card payment as that is what streamline charge us.

DavidTennantsMistress · 14/01/2008 21:07

£10 I don't mind paying. the other thou I think it was 3% on all card payments iirc.

I work for natwest (on mat leave at mo). Bankers draft fee is £12 (was when i finished to have baby) You need to give them notice ideally, only because it takes roughly 20mins to write out,get signed by mgnr etc. Take I.D.,they will only accept a passport or d.licence (photo) even if you are known to the branch. They will have to do checks which take a few mins,i.e. money is cleared funds etc. They change the rules all the time, with the limits on what i.d. you need etc.

bookwormmum · 14/01/2008 21:15

I had to give a password when I booked mine over the phone but this was donkeys years ago. £12 sounds quite reasonable to me.

DavidTennantsMistress · 14/01/2008 21:15

ok thanks gow - going to try and do it tomorrow I don't need it till thurs so was thinking if they'd need 3 days or something?

OP posts:

if the letting agents don't need the money til Thursday why can't you give them a cheque that won't cost you anything? By Thursday they would know if it was going to be rejected or not if you got it to them tomorrow.

glassofwhite · 14/01/2008 21:20

That kind of notice is fine they will put it in the diary, let them know what time you will want to collect x

DavidTennantsMistress · 14/01/2008 21:31

ok thanks gow.

whoops - can't a cheque has to be paid 10 days before you want to move in, and i'll only have the money to do it tomorrow.

glassofwhite · 14/01/2008 21:48

Are you moving into a new place DTM? Enjoy it if you are x

DavidTennantsMistress · 15/01/2008 08:54

yes, H and I have split up so with a lot of help from my parents have got a lovely place for me and DS. can't wait to get in there just dreading not being close to mates/all the packing & unpacking but with any luck this will be the last move for 3-5 years, as we only moved here last august.

Did you get your draft and did everything go smoothly (i hope) x

davidtennantsmistress · 20/01/2008 19:21

yes got it but not smoothly - ordered it on tues, for 9.30 am of thurs turned up at at 10 on thurs and had to wait for it to be done

then got there at the EA only to be told htey'd made an error adding it up and it was an extra £235 - to which the woman said 'do you not have a card you can use?' no I bloody don't have a card I can use - it was a strech getting the £1350 they wanted! but ahyhow, deep breaths and thankfully we sorted it all out so am now half of my stuff is there and half of my stuff is here
