Hi
My DH accidently binned a box with all my jewellery - he was cleaning the room and didn't know what it is !
Will I be able to claim it on home contents insurance - some of them (my grandmothers) obviously have lots of sentimental value !!

Your husband just throws away boxes/containers without looking to see what's inside?

You’ll need to check your policy. How would any of us know?!

redbigbananafeet · 03/06/2022 10:08

I'll bet he checked his boxes before throwing them away. It'll just be your crap that doesn't matter enough to deserve a glance

thefirstmrsrochester · 03/06/2022 10:10

Depends entirely on your policy cover.

Parky04 · 03/06/2022 10:11

Unlikely to be covered by insurance. Some policies cover accidental loss but this wasn't accidental!

CornishPorsche · 03/06/2022 10:13

Presumably this isn't recent? If it's recent, contact the company who deal with your bins - sometimes they can work out where in a landfill the bags from your street were deposited. They might be willing to help.

GiltEdges · 03/06/2022 10:13

No, I don't believe this would be covered under any home insurance policy. There'd be no insurance companies left in business if it was!

NewIdeasToday · 03/06/2022 10:25

As @GiltEdges says it will depend on your policy.

But think about it - if you report an item stolen the insurance company requires a police report. If you cancel a holiday due to illness they require a doctors certificate.

What formal evidence would you provide to show that your husband is a thoughtless and incompetent twat to do something like this ….. (ok don’t answer that!).

The insurance companies would be open to all sorts of claims without evidence if they paid out for something like this.

MrsWobble3 · 03/06/2022 10:29

I claimed for lost jewellery a few years ago and the insurance company agreed the claim. I had taken it to a hotel and thought I had left it there but the hotel couldn’t find it. I never actually got a payout because it actually turned up in a handbag I’d forgotten I’d taken away so I cancelled the claim. I was quite surprised the insurance company agreed to the claim as I had no evidence so you might be lucky.

Overthebow · 03/06/2022 16:07

I’m not sure as you didn’t lose it, your DH threw it away. So not really an accident as such. Try phoning them and ask?

Readytogogogo · 03/06/2022 16:48

Has he apologised OP? I hope he is making amends somehow? It was extremely inconsiderate of him to bin anything of yours without checking.
