Advice on how and when to advice HMRC are new primary job

I am starting a new job on Monday. It is going to be my primary job and l am going to continue with a 2nd job that l will pay basic rate tax at. New employer is aware of this and doesn’t have any issues. But how and when to l inform HMRC so l use my tax allowance on mew primary job and pay basic rate tax on 2nd job? I have tried on government gateway but this isn’t forthcoming. Do l ring HMRC now or wait until l start next Monday?

I would ask my new employer but their HR department are shocking. They are still trying to get their head around putting my right work location and salary in my contract!

Honestly I never have and I've often done two jobs HMRC sorts it out within a month or so and any excess tax comes back.

When you start the new job, you won't have a P45 to give as you are not leaving a job. So you complete a New Starter Checklist and tick box C because it is not your only employment. That starts you off on BR (Basic Rate) tax code.

Keep an eye on Personal Tax Account - gov.uk/personal-tax-account
When you see the new employer listed under PAYE, then you can use WebChat or call HMRC, to request that your tax code is reviewed and that you would like x job to be getting as much of the tax allowance as possible. HMRC may or may not agree to do that. If they do not agree... wait 3 months, then repeat the request. Once HMRC has the data that is saying that you are earning less in the first job and more in the second job, then they are likely to accept the request.

@nannynick but l will? I’m leaving my other main job and old employer said they will issue a P45

Ok, so you just give your P45 part 2&3 to your new employer.

Your second job remains on it's tax code and your new job takes the tax code from the job you are leaving.

@EL8888

I have sent you a PM with a HMRC telephone no. that I was given last week (by a v helpful HMRC advisor) for a similar issue that I will have in the future.

I am starting pension drawdown but already been told that, when I start to get my work pension and stop drawdown, the drawdown provider won’t give me a P45, as I will still have money in the pension.

HMRC advisor told me to ring at that time and they will change my allowance over to the work pension provider. I have sent you the number he gave me.
