CAR INSURANCE advice needed

nappymadmummy · 13/01/2008 12:17

Basically we've bought a 2nd car and need to insure it. The insurance on our 1st car is due for renewal next month.

Anyone know what would be the cheapest way to insure it? Would it be cheaper to get a month now and then renew both at the same time or just do it seperately?

We've tried ringing our current insurers but they won't give any no claims discount on the 2nd car (is that usual for 2nd cars????).

TIA

no claims is for the person not the car surely?

LadyMuck · 13/01/2008 14:32

I know that a lot of people ensure that the 2nd car is in the other spouse's name so that both spouses can earn no claims (though I think some insurers will now give you credit). Can't see that renewing at the same time is likely to save you much.

That's what we thought but they said they couldn't apply it to a 2nd car.

The 1st car was bought in dh's name and insured with him as the main driver, me as a named driver. We want the 2nd car insured in the same way (basically because dh will drive the 2nd car to work during the week and still drive the 1st car at weekends as it has 5drs, I'll only be using the 1st car a couple of times a week to go to M&B groups).

Sorry x-posted Ladymuck, do you think then that we should insure the 1st car with me as the main driver?

as your due up or renewal put your details into www.confused.com and www.elephant.com they will find the cheapest for you.

It might be better to insure the cars at separate times otherwise the insurance premiums will fall due at the same time when you come to renew, which could be expensive. Unless you pay monthly, in which case it won't make any difference.

Some insurers give you a discount if you insure more than one car with them. It might be worth checking that out.

I thought that a named driver couldn't hold NCB on 2 cars? You can only apply your No Claims to one vehicle.

You might have to insure car 2 in your name to apply any NCB you have earned, if you don't have any it might be worth doing to start accruing No Claims.

Am having problems using confused.com and those sort of sites because it won't allow me to check for both cars (and take into account any discount for insuring 2 cars with a provider iyswim).

Not too bothered about the premium being due in the same month as we put money into a savings account each month to cover it for the following year anyway.

Thanks Sidge, that would suggest our insurers were right with what they told us. Perhaps I'll change car 1 into my name then as that's the one I'll be driving.

You would want the person with the most NCB on the car which is the most expensive to insure regardless of which one they drive most.
