DLA Higher Rate

Hi , My dad is elderly and in bad health with COPD he also has severe osteoporosis especially in his hips and down his legs
He is currently on the lower DLA & I’m waiting for the occupational therapists to assess his home
He is reluctant for me to ask about the higher rate DLA as he’s frightened that he’ll lose his driving license as his walk is very bad and painful
has anyone been in this situation to advise me please ?

My brother is on the higher rate. He works part time as a courier in an adapted car

DLA isn’t related to whether someone can have a driving licence or not.

Only the daily living rate of DLA can be increased if he is over state retirement age. The mobility component cannot be increased.

Sorry I meant to say only the care component can be increased.

There is no way he could get a motability unless he already has high rate DLA mobility?

A DLA re-assessment would not mean he was reported to DVLA. Is he safe to drive in his current state?

Do you mean Attendance Allowance or PIP? He would need to be reassessed to be eligible for a higher rate of either. Perhaps that is what the OT is doing?

Older people who claim DLA and are above a certain age will stay on DLA but as I said above the mobility component cannot be increased past state pension age. If he were making a new claim and not already on DLA then he would apply for Attendance allowance.
