Why are they suggesting an extra payment?

On my British Gas app?

This is for my gas. Says I'm in credit and I've recently upped my DD.

My electricity says I'm £248 in credit and that's all, have recently reduced the DD for it.

I've only been paying by dd for 18 months and moved house in January and downloaded the app, so this is a bit new to me, but they get my meter readings via my smart meter.

Any thoughts?

Pretty sure that is just a standard button/option on all accounts regardless of your credit.

I think they're predicting that, with the increase in usage after the summer months, you will not be in credit by the end of the tariff period. The calculation might not take into account the fact you've recently increased your direct debit.

Have a look at your usage from January and February in terms of kWh and see if you agree with them. They may be trying to be helpful, so you don't end up with a horror bill to settle when the tariff ends, or they may simply be wanting to keep their own cash reserves higher to try and survive the energy crisis.

But it doesn't say it on my electricity page?

Thanks @tribpot I find it all so confusing! My plan ends in December, just in time for christmas and DS' 18th birthday, so I'm bloody anxious about this as it is.

I wouldn't have a clue about the kWh to be honest 🤷‍♀️

It's a standard button - I have the same.

roofio · 23/05/2022 21:09

No, if you look at both pictures. They don't have the same info. I see the "make an extra payment", but I mean the "you'll be in debit..." message

Based on their projections to the end of your plan they think you’ll be in debit when it finishes. Obviously your usage is higher in winter so that will be one reason.

roofio · 23/05/2022 21:39

@ReadyToMoveIt okay, thank you. I thought winter usage was already taken into account when I changed my direct debits recently. That's was I was told anyway 🙄

Have a look at your monthly bill, it will have the actual usage on it. The cost is made up of your usage (possibly priced differently at different times of the day) and a daily standing charge. You may be able to get detailed usage as you're on a smart meter, I can download it from the energy company website and it shows me the 48 readings per day, one for each half hour. But I'm not with the same company so not sure if you can or not.
