Has anyone used Step Change?

Has anyone on here used Step Change to help with debt?

Does it stay on your credit file if you do get 'help' from them?

Yes I have. I'm currently on a DMP (debt management plan) with them and it has been a life saver.

They've been so easy to deal with, the vast majority has been done online which suits me, but the option to speak to someone is available too. I hate speaking to people about my debts, I am so ashamed of them, but on the rare occasion I have had to speak to StepChange, every person has been lovely.

Not sure about the credit rating part as mine is beyond shit anyway so I don't really care.

Yes I did, years ago. They were great and completely non-judgemental. Their advice and support is excellent.

I use their website for parishioners, it's had mixed success. Some people have really sorted their finances others couldn't/wouldn't change their spending

It will be on your credit file for some years marked as an 'arrangement to pay'. You might also be issued with defaults.

However, you shouldn't let this put you off as it's the first step to debt freedom and until you take it, you could effectively be treading water for years, making substantial payments but not really getting anywhere due to interest and late payment fees taking up a big portion of the money you pay them.

You're also probably struggling to meet other bills as many people in debt naturally try to reduce spending on food or replacing essential clothing to repay their debts.

This is the wrong way round for unsecured debts like loans, overdrafts and credit cards. You should meet all your normal expenses and if you can't also pay your debts, that is the trigger that formal help is required.

Definitely talk to Stepchange.
