Piece of string question about retirement

What would you say was a comfortable retirement income for a couple who own their house outright?

Trying to work out what I should be saving but I'm finding it very hard- my life in retirement is going to be so different from my life now (kids, mortgage, etc etc).

What do you mean? Higher earners get 40% tax relief, how do they lose the option to fund pensions tax free?

If you are a very high earner (over £240k) you start to lose your pension annual allowance until it gets down to £4K www.gov.uk/guidance/pension-schemes-work-out-your-tapered-annual-allowance

it's a 'problem' I could learn to live with!

Yes sadly it’s not a problem l’m likely to have!

Ah ok, I wasn’t sure if OP was referring to this.

Could I ask a silly question: to what extent are private ( stocks and shares) pension entitlements protected in the event of a monumental stock market collapse? Would you be guaranteed to get back at least what you paid in?

You're not protected against the value of the investments collapsing but you do have protection if the provider goes bust or doesn't comply with regulations. It depends on exactly what you have but the outline of protection is here www.moneyhelper.org.uk/en/pensions-and-retirement/pensions-basics/how-safe-is-your-pension

But if the stock market crashes everyone has to suck it up...

@Mia85 Thanks. It is what I suspect will happen fairly soon.

Totally depends how they want to live/what they want to buy.
