Hi

Just wanted to check if you suddenly could not work due to illness/ signed off sick from agency work and had no source of income but had a mortgaged property

Have tried benefits advice calculator which mentions universal credit of £300 is this per week/ month?

Asking as current mortgage is around £700 so if payment is £300 a month obviously this will not cover the cost

Would you get separate benefits for council tax, housing benefits?

I am just looking into this as my worst case scenario while I try to also build up my own savings though I am told that you should also not have more than 3k else you would not be entitled to any support

Thanks and the figure of around £300 is this per week or month?

Standard single element for someone over 25 is £334.91 per month on UC. This is all you would get at first. Once you had been assessed for work capability after handing in sick notes, then if awarded LCWRA element on UC your total UC would rise by another £354.28 so £689.19 per month in total but the work capability process can take some months. There is no other help with a mortgage. You can claim council tax support from your local council. After nine months on UC with zero earnings you could apply for support for mortgage interest but this is a loan now rather than a payment.

And if you have kids you would get child elements on top.

This really shows how important it is to have an emergency fund. If you can get 3 months of essential outgoings saved and you can defer any income protection payout by 12 weeks, then you can get cover at a much better price. I believe the average time off sick is about 2 months.
