How do you keep life fun when you're on a budget?

With Covid feeling like a thing of the past I can sense old feelings creeping back noticing how everyone seems to be going abroad, having fancy date nights and going to gigs. I know Instagram is a highlights reel but when I found myself looking forward to going to a slightly bigger LIDL than usual this morning I thought that maybe it's time to inject a little more excitement in my life 😆

Ideas on a postcard please ❤️

Fun, free things we used to do:

Patio painting (jam jar full of water, thick paintbrush).

Hosing down the children in the garden - they loved jumping over the jets of water.

Hatching - covering them with cushions and pillows and watching them hatchling baby dinosaurs.

Drawing room camping - blanket over the back of the sofa propped up with chairs - tea on the floor - sandwiches, cake, fruit, squash.

Deer hunt and picnic in Richmond Park (v good when rainy- picnic could be had in the car or if it brightened up in the 0layground).

The museums NHM and science - the joy of living in London.

Story time at the library. Met my best grown up friend there and the DC had a ball - and squash and a biscuit - all for 20p.

Local garden centre with huge cold water fish sheds - better than the aquarium.

Keep an eye on the Moon, Mars, eclipses, pink moons, etc, and picnic under the stats in the garden.

Leaf kicking and conker collecting.

Crabbing and rock pooling on holiday.

Collecting shells, interesting stones and bits of glass at the beach.

Looking at flowers, colours and the sky.

Helping with cooking.

So many things to do that cost v v little. I loved it when dc were small.

I love magazines but can’t afford them, I found out that via the library there is an app I can use to read as many magazines (and newspapers, TV guides etc) for free. I need my library card and a pin they gave me. Might be different in other county’s.

I read something (probably on here but I can't remember) that said plan:

a tiny thing to look forward to every day (chapter of your book, nice bit of choc, cuppa in the garden)

A small thing to look forward to every week (lunch or a walk with a friend, new book from the library)

A medium thing to look forward to every month (dinner out, day trip etc)

And a big thing every season (holiday, theatre trip etc)

I love it and plan to aim for it.

I really love this, it's brilliant.
