Paying tax on account

Hello. I’m going to be claiming maternity allowance this year (self employed sole trader) so I’m already quite certain I’m going to earn under threshold for 2022 - 2023 (as far as I understand, maternity allowance isn’t classed as taxable income).

This year, I started paying tax on account, so as well as £1500 for 2021-2022 taxes, I’ll be paying an additional total £1500 for estimated 2022 - 2023 taxes on Jan and June. Is there any way to not do this in advance rather than having to claim back once I’ve done my April 2023 tax return? Just seems a bit daft when I know it’ll need revising and rebating. Thank you.

When you submit your 2021/22 return you can ask that your POAs ( for 22/23 ) be reduced to nil.

Thanks @LizzieMacQueen I already filed my return but I’m going to try and do that retrospectively now. I’m hoping that won’t affect my maternity allowance though? (Shouldn’t though should it as it’s all future facing?) My 2021 - 2022 is all sorted so hopefully that’s enough for the MA.

You are allowed to file an amended return for 21/22. Under the payments section there should be an option to reduce those poas to nil.

@LizzieMacQueen Yep, found it! Thank you ever so much. I’ve gone through the whole claim to reduce process so hopefully that’ll do it. Thank you again.
