Carers and housing benefit

So I am currently a lone parent on income support and tax credits. ( ex husband left me for another woman) I get housing benefit of 0.50p so I have to pay all my rent using my tax credits. I'm affected by the benefit cap due to claiming tax Credits for 5 children ( all born before 2017. ) So that's why they said I can't have any help with rent as that would then exceed the benefit cap.

I care for my mum and only last week I was made aware that I can claim carers for her to cover my costs of travelling to and from her etc. I made the claim 3 days ago; but now I've been told it gets taken from my income support so it's pointless claiming as I won't receive any extra money and that it's a taxable income so will this then reduce my tax credits also and completely cancel my housing benefit claim it the 50p ( I wanted to keep my claim open for as long as I can in case circumstances change and I actually become entitled to more like when my oldest child ( she's 16 next month) leaves education ect

So is this true? Was there any point? I do care for the 35 hours and wa
just hoping it would cover some of my travel costs but seems like it won't !!

@Babyroobs 35 hours is often a full time job- as op claims income support and caring 35 hours a week she is unable to work and claims income support instead. Not quite how the system should work but I can see it's obviously a sensitive subject to those who aren't working and providing.

doveseternal Don’t be ridiculous! You are clearly not an unpaid carer and do not have a disability requiring care otherwise you wouldn’t post such nonsense.

Even if everyone needing 35 hours care did need assisted living, which isn’t the case, you do realise 1,304,000 claim carer’s allowance (as of Feb 2022) so that’s at least 1,304,000 people needing at least 35 hours of care, and that’s only where someone claims carer’s allowance for them, so there wouldn’t even be the places in assisted living.

It is exactly how the system should work. £67.90 per week for caring for someone is hardly well paid, it saves the state a fortune. Besides OP could continue to get IS without claiming CA, due to the age of her youngest child.

Ok, so my mum would rather have someone she knows and comfortable with her caring for her then a total stranger, secondly it's a hell of a lot easier juggling caring responsibility's and children than a full time job and children
It isn't comparable

You do know that the income support will amount to the grand total of £160 a month when the carers allowance is taken off .

Why are you so angry 🤣

You so obviously are . I'm not sure there's any helping you though

Ok so I rang carers allowance to ask for an update. It's been 4 weeks since I claimed. Anyway she said a decision has been made but wouldn't tell me over the phone saying I have to wait for
The letter. She didn't mention whether I would get any payments or not. So I take it I haven't been accepted and will expected a declined letter in the next couple of days. I don't understand if my mum claims PIP and I care for her as she needs the support why would I be declined? Does it depend on how many points she has on her PIP? I'm sure if I was accepted she would have told me that on the phone so I'm guessing I haven't
