UC and adult child at home

My friend claimed UC as a single person when her son was away at university. She gets extra for ill health and towards rent. Her son (age 20) has quit uni and is living there. He was just earning bits and pieces but now earning a full time wage. Does she have to declare it or not? Thanks.

Yes she needs to advise of the change.

VanCleefArpels · 28/04/2022 17:07

Yes - they will deduct an amount commensurate with his expected contribution to the household. She also needs to tell the council if she was claiming a reduction of council tax for living alone.

Yes she needs to declare it. About £75 will be deducted from UC for rent and council tax will increase. She will need to ask him to pay for the difference.

Babyroobs · 28/04/2022 18:05

Yes she should declare it but there will be no non dependent deduction from her rent element until he turns 21. If she claims a disability benefit I don't think there will be a deduction even then. She needs to let the council know as his wages will affect her council tax single occupancy discount and any other discount she gets.

His earnings have no bearing on her UC but she has to declare him living there and as above a 75 pound contribution is assumed although obviously he should be given her a lot more than that

What happens if an adult dc lives at home but they get PIP and work but one or et gets carers allowance for them?

27glitteryTomcats · 28/04/2022 18:13

Parent not or et

Babyroobs · 28/04/2022 18:59

There is no deduction until he turns 21.

Soggydog · 28/04/2022 21:44

Sorry absolutely right, forgot the deduction isn't until 21 🤦

Thank you all. She has told the council for council tax yesterday as she suddenly realised about it.

So she should inform them but they won't deduct as he is under 21?

She gets the health element in UC (LCWRA) but nothing extra - no PIP (She wouldn't qualify).
