Card Reader being required for inline purchases.

Exactly this. Was purchasing something from Next yesterday using a Barclay credit card when a security box appeared instructing me how to use a card reader. There were no other options for authentication. I tried several times. Rang Barclays and was told it was a new security measure. I asked why a code wasn’t posted to my phone. At first she said they couldn’t have my phone number and then saw they had. They could send me a card reader which will take up to 10 days. Went to the bank today to ask if they had them but they can only order them. As I had used an iPad I thought I would try my Mac but the result was just the same. After this I used another card (not Barclays)and was given three options for authentication so all was well. It seemed very strange that if Barclays requires a card reader now there was no prior warning and you can’t even pick one up from the bank. Am I alone or has anyone else had this happen to them?

Do you have a card reader for any other bank? I have one as it is used to log in to my bank online or when setting up new payments or standing orders on the app.

dementedpixie · 13/04/2022 22:55

www.barclays.co.uk/ways-to-bank/confirm/ do you have the app?

GeoffLynton · 13/04/2022 22:57

I recently had to order a card reader just to download the Barclaycard app- even though I'd had the app before on a previous device.

Seemed crazy to be circulating more plastic crap in 2022, but there you go.

Roystonv · 13/04/2022 23:06

HSBC are doing this and I need to order a card reader as no mobile and don't want one, whilst 'code' can go to dh's mobile he obviously has to be there to give me it.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/04/2022 07:50

HMRC will send codes to landlines, do Barclays not offer this option?

OceanAtTheEnd · 14/04/2022 08:06

This is due to a change in the law I think - there was a feature about it in the Money Box podcast. They did mention that information about it hasn't been disseminated enough.

dementedpixie · 14/04/2022 08:10

2 factor authentication or something. I know dd has to go on her santander app to authorise transactions. Think I was sent a code for my nationwide transaction

GeneLovesJezebel · 14/04/2022 08:17

I now frequently have to go onto RBS to approve a transaction. I was paying £20 to Next on line the other day and had this, seems silly when contactless is so much more.

Bunnycat101 · 14/04/2022 08:32

It’s a complete pain. We’ve got a joint credit card and can only have one number for both cards. When the authentication kicks in I have to check my husband’s phone. He didn’t appreciate it when I called him at 6am to get the code for my parking app.

OceanAtTheEnd · 14/04/2022 08:35

I think the three options for authentication are a code to a mobile phone, using your banking app, or a card reader. Bit of a faff.

ChessieFL · 14/04/2022 15:52

I usually get a code sent to my mobile phone. These usually come straight through with no issues. However the other day I was trying to buy something and the code to my phone just didn’t arrive. I tried several times, same result. I eventually had to switch devices so I could log into my credit card app to approve the payments.

The 7 codes I had generated all arrived at the same time about 3 hours later!

HappydaysArehere · 14/04/2022 18:38

Thank you all for the info. All very useful. I don’t think I can get an app as I don’t bank with Barclays. I am using a Barclay Card as a credit card. We checked with them and they have our mobile phone number but no options other than the card reader. I took out a Lloyds Mastercard when Amazon were threatening to abandon Visa so used that for the purchase. Lloyds gave me three options so chose the code so no problem. Barclays Bank couldn’t understand why I had no other options. Barclays even read out the end of my mobile no so they definitely have it.

There is a barclaycard app although it doesn't get great reviews

OceanAtTheEnd · 14/04/2022 18:50

You can definitively use the Barclaycard app, even if you just have a Barclaycard credit card.

BarbaraofSeville · 14/04/2022 19:13

I agree, I've never had a Barclays current account but have a Barclaycard because it was an old Egg card that they took over and I use the Barclaycard app.

OceanAtTheEnd · 14/04/2022 19:47

I meant to write definitely 😄.

Yes you definitely can, as I have the app for my Barclaycard but don't bank with Barclays.

But, as I mentioned up there^^ they made me get a card reader just to set up the bloody app!

I do all my banking with Halifax, and they just send the passcodes

alltheteeshirts · 14/04/2022 20:01

Change banks.

All the traditional high street ones are like this. Challenger banks have security checks too, but they're less annoying and involve your phone rather than yet another piece of plastic to lose. Customer service is better, too.

Lougle · 14/04/2022 20:45

I bank with Barclays and I haven't ever had to do this.
