How many units of electricity do you use a day?

Always a lot of talk about the cost, but I wonder how many UNITS you actually use a day. Do you measure it? We have and it varies between 2 and 13 a day.

2 is when we have been away so that is the baseline when only necessary things are on (fridge, freezers, alarm) and 13 when it is freezing and overcast so solar panels are not in use and I am using an electric heater in my office.

On a sunny day, the average we use is 6 which costs £2.13 per day including the daily charge.

I am looking forward to getting one of those units that measures per appliance as I would like to investigate better where the usage is.

Gas is easier to manage in the summer as the heating is used infrequently and we just use it for water heating, about 4 units a day which costs £3.21 including the standing charge. This will be the killer come winter ths year.

I don't track by day but know we use around 6,000 kwh electricity and 10,000 kwh gas per year. I also have a fair idea of how they break down month by month.

Dolares · 13/04/2022 22:16

According to my statements we average between 6 and 8kwh a day.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 13/04/2022 22:21

Averages out to be 4-5Kwh per day. One bedroom flat, Electric cooker, Electric power shower. I hardly ever have the TV on and can easily manage with just 1-2 loads of washing a week, so I'm relatively low use. Gas central heating, but that's only ever on for maybe an hour a day from November through March. It's just not needed the rest of the year.

worried91 · 16/04/2022 12:22

My god! I had absolutely no idea but remembered I'd taken a meter reading two weeks ago so I've taken it away from today's reading and we use on average 28 units a day!!!

worried91 · 16/04/2022 12:25

I've just had a look at my last bill and we pay 0.18p per unit so around £4.50 per day or £150 a month. My provider has just increased my DD to £300 a month though!

Welsh2479 · 18/04/2022 00:34

This is actually scaring me we use 4.00 a day and we don't use the washing machine because we just can't afford it, boiler is off lights off, we turn appliances off, I still have to cook or else we don't eat, how can we still be using £4.00 a day!
We have £5.00 emergency which has to last a four days!
How can I make it last?

How are you washing clothes, using a kettle ? Wouldn't it be more cost effective to use the washer once a week. Are you entitled to any help from your energy company ?

Svara · 18/04/2022 06:35

Average of last bill, 2.57, average at winter peak 3.55. Gas heating/water/stovetop. Two people in a three bed semi.

Svara · 18/04/2022 06:36

Kwh not £!

DockOTheBay · 18/04/2022 06:40

Over the winter an average of 8kwh of electricity.

According.to our bill, the gas was 45kwh a day which seems like an awful lot but there's some sort of calculation you have to go from m2 to kwh if I remember correctly, so that might be wrong.

The standing charge is about 45p now so thats half of your £5 gone already. What do you use to cook? Electric ovens can use a lot of energy if you have them on for a long time. Otherwise £4 a day sounds like quite a lot.
Svara · 18/04/2022 06:52

Do you have cous cous or noodles that only take a kettle? Microwave rice? Or bread for toast? Then quick microwave or stovetop food to go with that? I'd be avoiding anything that takes a lot of energy to cook like oven food.

£5 would last us four days for electricity or two days for both gas and electricity. I don't think it’s doable if it has to cover hot water for showers as well.

Roselilly36 · 18/04/2022 06:54

We were using, 20 units a day, 4 adults all WFH, we had solar installed with battery, now using 1 unit a day from the grid on average. Huge saving for us, although the system wasn’t cheap to install, but as we intend to stay here, it was worth the investment.

PukkaP · 18/04/2022 07:00

My average is 20kwh per day. I have no gas though

CaitlynBrooker85 · 18/04/2022 12:03

Our average for the colder months is also a little above 20kW h, but there's four of us and we worked from home until recently. Now that spring is coming and I'm going to spend more time at the office, I hope the number will decrease. We're also considering solar panels, with everything going on in the world, we need to find alternative ways to secure power for our homes.

simbobs · 18/04/2022 12:13

At most 7 units a day, unless DH is charging the car. We do have solar panels, though, so won't be paying for more than 2 of those.

Asdf12345 · 19/04/2022 08:43

200 a month in winter. More in summer when we turn the Rayburn off and use an electric hob and oven instead.

Mirrorball2022 · 19/04/2022 09:55

Looking at last month anything from 4 unit to the odd day at 9 units. We are low energy users though. Only two of us. Led lighting.

22Newnames · 19/04/2022 10:00

Just checked and from 21 to 31 March we used 27 units per day. House of 4/5 mainly at home. Gas central heating and water so this is just electricity Blush

Since then we have started to drastically think about tumble dryer use etc. Not quite sure how we could ever bring it down to 10 units though 🤷‍♀️

RelativePitch · 21/04/2022 09:22

9 to 12 units a day. A good day would be spending £2.45, a day where washing machine has been on a couple of times, dishwasher etc..more like £3.65. Standing charge is exactly 50p per day.

MintyIguana · 21/04/2022 14:21

We've been away recently. Just checked smart meter and looks like it was using 4 kWh per day while we were out. So that must be the few things left plugged in. 8-10 per day now we're home and I've done quite a few loads of washing and using quite a few appliances.

Natsku · 21/04/2022 14:38

We use between 30 and 40kwh a day, except for days we heat the sauna, then it jumps up between 50 and 60kwh. This includes electric boiler, electric oven etc. (no gas here). When I look at it hourly, the biggest spike is around the time I cook dinner so oven/hob uses up a lot. I think I might do some experiments, so long as I remember to write the date and hour of the experiments as it takes a few days for the readings to show, for example seeing how big a difference eco wash makes compared to normal wash, or using air fryer instead of oven, or boiling kettle with a small amount of water for each cup of tea versus boiling a full kettle and filling a flask for several cups of tea.

Blondeshavemorefun · 22/04/2022 12:36

Average 14 a day £3.57 for electric and 58 for gas at £3.18 so just under £7 a day or £210 a month

obv this will come down as use lights less as lighter fir longer and heating isn’t on now unless for an hour if chilly

hoping next month bill is a lot less

thetulipsarelookinglovely · 22/04/2022 20:04

We averaged 5 kWh electricity per day so far in April and 21 kWh per day gas.

we have gas hobs and central heating. Surprised our electricity is so low compared to others as we use devices a lot and I’m constantly charging things, wash 4 times a week, but no tumble drier.

Heating has mostly been in April.

thetulipsarelookinglovely · 22/04/2022 20:07

I mean heating has mostly been off in April.
