Hi - I've temporarily stopped working to look after ill child & am trying to apply for credit card to use overseas as my existing card charges a lot abroad. In fortunate position that husband has good salary but I seem unable to get card as all based on my income rather than household. Any suggestions on how to solve or how else to pay for things abroad? Many thanks!

Can your dh get a card suitable for your needs and then add you as an additional card holder?

Your husband will need to apply, credit card companies won’t give you credit based on his income. If you want it in your name only you would be best to look at a pre pay card that has good rates

Thank you!

I struggled to find a 0% credit card for a balance transfer as I’d had back to back maternity leaves so was high risk. Virgin money were the only one I found that took our household income instead of just mine. Got a credit limit of £4k on just his wages alone pretty much, which I thought was quite good.

Oh I forgot to say, I found them through the money saving website which does a soft check to see if you’ll be accepted, so it doesn’t go on your credit score if you’re not

If you want it mainly for overseas spending you could open a Starling account, put the money you would spend in there and use that as it's the same rate and zero charges just like the best overseas credit cards.

However, if you need it for things like hire car deposits, probably best to get your DH to apply for a card and get a second card for you.

On the starling card, if you don't apply for an overdraft, they will be less bothered about you not earning.

Interesting! I am in America and all
Credit cards here are fine with you using your joint income.

If it’s just for using abroad, how about Monzo (if it doesn’t have to be a credit card)?
