I keep reading this but I’m not getting a pay rise. When the media display al of the prices going up I do wish they would point out that not everyone is getting a pay rise, despite everything else rising.

Maybe it's an average?
Some people get more, some people get less

Why do they need to? Would people really read that and think it means everyone is getting the same rise?

It sounds like everyone is getting a rise, but they’re not.

But you'd know from your own experience that the rise doesn't apply to everybody and that it's an index of wage increases.

It's also clear if you read the ONS information, rather than the headline, that it's not something that will apply to everyone. How could it? There isn't a 'standard' wage rise that's applied to everyone by law, which would be the only way that the statement 'wages up by 3.8%' could possibly apply to everyone. Surely you don't think all newspaper headlines are statement of fact?

Why does it? That was my question to you - do you really think everyone reading that thinks, ā€œoh, every worker in the U.K. is getting 3.8%?ā€

If a headline was about a 5% increase in food prices would think they should add:
*actually it’s +5% on bread, +10% on beans but pasta - if you shop at Aldi - is down 7%

Unless it’s being presented as: shut up, wages are up 3.8% but the reality is 30m get nothing but 200 directors get a huge increase, I don’t see the issue.

7% of the U.K. workforce is paid at or below NMW - and those on NMW with a law abiding employer are about to get 6.6%

While those on just above will probably get less than 3% . I get closer to minimum wage every year, soon to be less than a pound more than someone from the agency with no experience at all, despite having much more expected of me. Not that I don't think minimum wage should go up!

It really doesn't.

No it doesn't. It sounds like what it is, on average, wages are going up 3.8%. Some will get more, some less, some nothing. Everyone knows this!
Polkadotties · 17/03/2022 11:09

I work in pensions admin, already got pensioners complaining they are ā€˜only’ getting an increase of 3.1% (September 2021 CPI). I didn’t have a pay increase last year and I won’t be getting one this year.

Danikm151 · 17/03/2022 12:15

3.8%!
we're still waiting to hear if we're getting a 2% rise!

Yes those on NMW will be getting a decent hourly raise but some companies will be reducing their hours to make up for the shortfall.

I don’t think most people do read it as everyone getting a pay rise.

My child might.

That is true people who aren't used to these sort of headlines might I suppose
