At what point do IFAs start charging for mortgage and investment advice?

For mortgage advice there is no need to pay a fee, many mortgage brokers are fee free .

IFA's charge fees either up front or ongoing but they should make it very clear in their first (free!) conversation with you and detail in writing.

Second this. Mortgage advisers may charge a fee if the case is very complex (advserse or very specific situations) or if it is a small mortgage. Generally, fee free and receive payment from the mortgage company.

Investment advice is clearly laid out in a document they will provide you at your first meeting. It could be a % of the amount invested, or a flat fee. When and how this is paid varies.

Any decent IFA should make you feel within your comfort zone and be able to explain their fees clearly and without confusion.

If they Can't, then try another one. It really is horses for courses
