Please help me with my UC payment and my bonus!

Hi all, can anyone advise.
My earnings from my employer are roughly £860 a month and I normally get around £650 UC based on having 2 children.
I am getting a bonus this month and I am expecting it to be around £650 max meaning my employer will report approx. £1500 to UC end of March. I have NO idea how this is going to affect my April UC payment. Does this take me over the cap and I will get nothing? I am really worried that I am going to end up out of pocket and don’t know how to work it out. I live in Lancashire any advise would be so appreciated!

Why would it put you put of pocket if its roughly the same as what you get each month anyway?

It's not it's a bonus so it's an additional payment on it op of my monthly salary.
I am expecting my April up payment will be reduced or £0 due to my earnings for March being reported as higher but I don't know how to work out what I should get with an income of around £1500

Your bonus will be included in the calculation for your next UC payment. Which will go down. But that’s fine, because you will have your bonus instead.

And the good news is, with the month to month calculation, you don’t have to worry about getting to the end of the tax year and owing back on overpayment, as happens a lot with tax credits.

You can always use the Entitledto calculator to check exactly what the impact will be?

You get a work allowance as you have children of either £557 if you have no housing costs or £335 if you do. Anything above will reduce UC by 55p for each .£1 you earn. The claim should stay open.

Yeah so I'm aware that I could save my bonus for April to make up for the lack of UC which I would be doing but I didn't know if I could keep some of my bonus and enjoy it if my UC isn't deducted to 0.
I just don't know how to work it out.

So with a months wages of £1510 you will have a take home of around £1330 (as this takes you into tax bracket). About £480 over your usual pay.

From above you will loose 55p in the £1 from your UC on the payment after the wage is reported. So in £480, you will loose £264 from next UC payment. So UC will be around £386?

I'm no expert, I'm just following through deductions others have posted as well as payment calculations. Hopefully I'm in the right ball park.

What that does mean though is that as you still stay within the claim figures it should only be a 1 off 'loss' and not a need to reclaim...

LittleOwl153 · 24/02/2022 13:06

From my calculation above it looks like you should gain around £200. Whether you spend that in March or wait and see what UC payment appears in April would probably depend on how strapped it would leave you if it goes wrong... UC is not that reliable I believe!

Danikm151 · 24/02/2022 13:11

You'll still be paying tax and NI on your bonus so your take home will be less than the £1510.
Take what your UC entitlement is at the top of your usual statement. Then from your salary take away whatever work allowance you have (renting/owning) then times the remaining amount by 0.55 then what is left over, take that away from your UC entitlement to get your figure.
EG: UC entitlement £1500, salary £1500-335= 1165. 1165x0.55=646.
£1500-646= £854

Thanks so much all for taking time to work that out for me. I'll put my minivan on a saving pocket anyway and see what April looks like but I just had NO idea what to expect! Hopefully I might have a little treat when April come 🤞🏼

Put your bonus into your pension - it will then be topped up by another 20% by the government, and be disregarded for UC and will not affect your usual UC payments.

@seekingasimplelife I really was debating making a bonus sacrifice if I wasn't any better off which was why I was trying to figure it out 😬
