"Hi Mum" SCAM (AKA WhatsApp family scam) - beware

A few people at work have been targeted by this scam so I thought it would be a good idea to post a thread here for awareness, as it particularly targets parents.

What happens is:

You receive a message along the lines of 'Hi Mum, it's me - I've lost my phone, this is my new number'
You then save the number as your DD/DS's new contact.*
Shortly after, you receive a message from your 'child' asking for money - sometimes building on the lost phone theme, e.g. can't access their banking app so need you to pay an urgent bill for them; need money to replace the 'lost' phone etc.
You're given bank details to send a transfer.

You send the transfer, then get more messages asking for more money.

(*if, at this point, you ask which of your children it is, they will say 'guess!' or 'your favourite child' or otherwise avoid giving a name)

It is a SCAM. The person contacting you is a scammer, not your son/daughter.

They rely on you not wanting to leave your child in the lurch by creating a sense of urgency, and once you've sent money by bank transfer, you can't get it back.

How to avoid being scammed:

  • Speak to your child, and contact them ON THE ORIGINAL NUMBER you hold for them and ask whether the message is genuine.

Hope this is helpful!

*she knows I know she doesn't do online banking!

ClariceQuiff · 22/02/2022 19:28

@Winederlust

My mum had this the other day. Suspicions raised as soon as they asked for a bank transfer as she knows I know doesn't do online banking. She decided to have some fun with it and strung them along - they even asked for a photo of her credit card at one point. In the end she suggested they 'ask dad' (my parents are divorced) then told them to get stuffed and blocked them!
Good on her!

My friends mum fell for this the other day, lost £3k

My own mum got a text the other day- luckily she was on the ball and rang me and my sibling. She's recently bereaved after my Dad passed away and it really troubled her, scum bags!

I had this about a month ago

I have 6 kids (aged 25-15,girl,4 boys then another girl)

I never ever speak to them on WhatsApp-I don’t even know if they have it-I only have it to speak to one friend

we do text, ring or fb/instagram messager

Anyway,I was at work when I got a message from someone claiming to be my eldest

‘Hi mum,it’s your favourite daughter,I’ve lost my phone so this is my new number’ (so far,so good-it’s just how she speaks and it’s believable that she could have lost her phone/card)

Blah, blah, blah, then the whole ‘I need some money, please can you send £1k as I really need it as I’ve lost my card and can’t access my online banking’

What they didn’t know was I’d already asked both dd’s via messager (followed up by a phone call) and they both knew nothing about it

They all know I don’t do online banking-any money I do send is via my partners online banking and I pay him back in cash

I sent a message back saying ‘sure darling-name your silblings,in order and don’t forget their middle names and their ages and I’ll send it right away’

I’m still waiting…

Maybe they’ve lost their new new phone as well? They do seem to be the careless type…
Pearmain · 23/02/2022 05:32

Are men getting these messages too? Strange how it seems to just be elderly/older women getting the messages, how do the scammers know?

Pinkmagic1 · 23/02/2022 06:22

My dad had one, worded 'Hi Dad'. Luckily he checked with my sisters and me and then blocked the number.

RockStarMartini · 23/02/2022 07:39

I’ve also had this but with a message claiming to be from my brother, it was very convincing but something was off about the wording. As he regularly asks to borrow money from me I could easily have been fooled but luckily I spotted it.

So be aware it’s not just mums/kids they’re targeting.

rattlemehearties · 23/02/2022 07:57

I wonder if they can see the profile picture on WhatsApp and that's how they decide to say hi mum or hi dad? Or maybe it's random

saraclara · 23/02/2022 08:04

I had it too. I asked them to tell me what their old phone number was. They 'couldn't remember' so I told them they were scammers, and blocked the number.

fitflopqueen · 23/02/2022 11:41

I had one of these, child professing to have dropped phone down loo, (not unusual for child 1), never actually asked for money though. Only realised when child 2 said to me that child 1 hadn't received a reply to her news. Found her real message in WhatsApp archive as i had put the "new number in for her detail. They got a picture of the dog though before I realised and blocked/deleted.

Bippertyboo2 · 23/02/2022 11:48

We had a text at the weekend and were almost taken in by it because one of our sons had damaged his phone last week and was swapping his sim card in and out of his work phone. Luckily we thought to ask the sender for proof of identity and then blocked and reported them. However, we told our ds who lives at home and he messaged them telling they were disgusting etc and they had the nerve to text him back telling him to 'chill out'!!! They actually have a profile on Whatsapp now where this back and forth thread is and obviously have no shame. I have to say it really shook us up to have been so nearly scammed out of £1800.

FarmGirl78 · 02/03/2022 18:48

I shouldn't laugh, but my Dad fell for this recently, and it developed into a big slanging match between himself and the scammer. He saved the number under my name, then kept getting pestered for money, but ha ha ha, he was busy watching his favourite tv program and lost his rag and up sending back messages like..

Scammer: Dad...I need that money now.
(No reply)
Scammer: Dad...
Dad: You'll have to wait till your Mum is home. She does the internet banking.
Scammer: Dad. Please help.
Scammer: jJust send me the money via internet banking.
Dad: You'll have to wait for your Mother.
Scammer: Dad!
Dad: WHAT?!!
Scammer: I need some money NOW.
Dad: STOP TEXTING ME! You'll have to wait for your Mum to get home. She's at your Nans. She's busy.
Scammer: What's her number? I need the money urgently.
Dad: YOU CAN'T RING HER NOW! SHE'S SORTING YOUR NAN OUT.
Scammer: please Dad
Dad: ARE YOU MENTAL? BE PATIENT!! SHE'LL BE UP TO HER EYEBALLS IN SHIT.
Scammer: What's her number?
DAD: I'VE HAD ENOUGH. JUST RING HER THEN. JUST STOP TEXTING ME! I'M WATCHING TV.

Mum eventually text me asking how much money I needed and then we realised. I phoned Dad to tell him it was a scam and totally irrate and angry he shouted "WELL ITS ONE OF YOUR FRIENDS THEN, BECAUSE IT'S SOMEONE WHO KNOWS YOU'VE JUST GOT A NEW PHONE" 🤣🤣.

We took it back a few steps further and he was mortfied he'd fallen for it. I thought it was hilarious that some oblivious scammer had got the rough end of my Dads wrath who obviously would happily see his first born Daughter left in the middle of an emergency if it dared interfer with his favourite tv. 😂

Oblomov24 · 25/02/2024 09:03

I fell for this yesterday I'm embarrassed to say. Even though I knew about such scams. I feel like such a twat. I phoned the bank. I spoke to someone nice and she made a couple of suggestions. I phoned ds1. I then played with the bloke, telling him I was online to the bank fraud dept. The kind lady assured me all was fine and no money had gone through, none was lost, phew. I started asking him wierd questions about ds1, that only ds1 would know. In the end I was enjoying teasing the scammer. But I am ashamed. What a numpty. I feel so very stupid.

Oneblindmouse · 25/02/2024 22:10

I received one of these Whatsapp messages when I was with DS and we were waiting for DD to arrive for a day out. Of course I thought it was DD. I replied to the message by asking how long they were going to be and telling them about our lovely lunch in the sunshine by the river.

They didn't reply😁😁
