Earning extra money

Sophiesuze · 21/02/2022 20:37

Hi. I have a busy full time job with a decent (ish) salary but we have got ourselves into a lot of financial difficulties and we are really struggling.
I have looked and looked for evening work, work I can do at home in addition to my full time job but I am at a loss. Does anyone have any ideas how I can earn a bit of extra money; home working would be preferable (as I have two children and my partner sometimes has to travel with work) but open to suggestions. Thank you

My mum does market research.

Not a steady income but she gets between 2 and 5 a month and they're usually £40-£60 a research session! Some are online some are now in person again things are getting back to normal. Normally an hour / 90 mins.

Easy money and gives her something to do on her days and evenings off around working PT.

I've tagged along for a few over the years and the last one I went to was cereal tasting Grin

I’m in a very similar position. I don’t have dependant children anymore but could really do with earning a few extra £££.

Depends on your skills. Online transcribing can bring in decent money if you have the skills

Sophiesuze · 21/02/2022 21:26

What market research companies if you don’t mind me asking? Never sure if they are scams or not.
I am educated to degree level but my main job is very specific so not really transferable

That sounds really tough for you. What are your skills? Realistically, how much time do you have? Are you both taking on the burden? Have you spoken to the people you owe money to?

FindingMeno · 21/02/2022 21:54

Could you do any tutoring?

Sophiesuze · 21/02/2022 22:06

We haven’t spoken to people we owe money to as I don’t want to risk losing my house by ruining my credit etc. I work full time so mainly evenings and weekends.
I work for the criminal justice system. I manage a team of people, do training, write assessments / reports etc but nothing that you could do freelance.
I have looked at tutoring but don’t even know where to start. It’s hard to know what companies are legit.

Any leeway to train to do something? Alternative therapy for example?

TabithaTittlemouse · 21/02/2022 23:36

Not from home but What about joining a hospital trust bank as a hca. Especially if your area has secure services or a 136 suite?

Fungirls · 22/02/2022 13:26

It is concerning that you state “ We haven’t spoken to people we owe money to” as this makes me think you have your head in the sand and denying reality.

Use the time you would spend on a second job sitting down and don a full audit of your income, expenditure, total debts etc. Then look at where you can cut back on current expenses and the best way to pay off debts. Can you get 0% transfers so you are only paying the debt back and not interest?

SilkySuky · 22/02/2022 13:32

I know two people who do chatroom moderation for an online bingo company. They both do 4 hour slots, in the evenings and throughout the night. The hours are bad but the pay is decent. They give a budget for you to get a desk and computer equipment. One lady is on mat leave so is up all hours with the little one anyway and the other works 30 hours a week on top.

I looked at doing it myself but luckily found a better paying day job so I didn't need to.

I really haven’t got my head in the sand (I did have for years and that’s what got me into this situation, among other things). I have been through everything and that’s why I want to try and get some extra money to help pay things off. I have too much debt so not eligible for (that’s partially why I am in the situation I am in because 0% came to an end on a few things at once). Any debt management plans would affect my credit which would make remortgaging (next year) harder and lead to more issues. Unless you know of anything that doesn’t affect credit?

Thanks for the update, it wasn’t clear from your OP that you had done the basics.

There is the £10 a day threads which could give you a start. Also consider signing up with an Agency as they will have a range of jobs you could do, as you have transferable skills.

I've been using an app called Freetrade lately which is a trading app but they have a great free share referral scheme. When you sign up for the app via a referral link, you are credited when a free share worth between £3-£200. Then each time you refer a friend (up to 10 referrals per month), you both get a free share. I've made about £50 just from 4 or 5 referrals. You do need to deposit £1 into the app to claim the free share but you can then withdraw it again once the free share has come through. My referral link is below!

If you are prepared to do it, there are lots of carer vacancies at the moment. I work two 12 hour shifts a week, brings in £900 ish a month that I am using to tackle our debts.
