just so I know what I'm getting into!

I would like to get it all over and done with asap. I don't have any money - what are the solicitors fees on average?
and any other helpful advice or knowledge you can pass on please!

are you both in agrrement? if so dont use a solicitor. you can get an hours free advice and they will tell you best way about it. you can pick up divorce papers from a court and do it all yourself.

I was in full agreement with ex over everything - we had no assets, which made it easier and went for shared custody. I rang the relevant section of the local courts, they posted the forms (which you have to fill out in triplicate), we signed and the whole thing was done and dusted within quite a short period. There is a cost (a while ago hence I'm vague about specifics) - nothing compared to solictors etc.

You can find out whether you're eligible for legal aid by looking at the legal services commission website eligibility calculator.

You can do the divorce part yourself by filling in forms available from your local county court, but I'd strongly recommend seeing a solicitor. Even though you say you have no money, do you realise you probably have a claim against your husband's pension, you may get spousal maintenance for yourself as well as child maintenance, and if you have a property, it may well be possible for you to stay in it.

To find a local family specialist, go to www.resolution.org.uk.
