car insurance for a learner/young driver - it feels like such a gamble to choose the right option.

Do we get the policy that starts now with DC as a learner and carries through when (hopefully) he passes in (perhaps) September and is valid for a year and allows him to get (hopefully) 1 years no claims bonus.

That's £1470.

Or do we insure the car in my name and pay for learner insurance for DS until he passes and then get a policy for him.

£214 to insure the car in my name plus £180 for 12 weeks learner insurance. Realistically add at least another 12 weeks so £214 + £360 = £574.
Quite possibly even another 12 weeks (booking a test is still quite tricky) so £574 + £180 = £754.

And that's assuming he passes first time of course.

The quote for him holding a full licence on this car is coming in at £1993.

So we're taking a gamble aren't we? Whatever we choose.

We paid as we went really….paid for 1 month at a time. Eldest didn’t learn till summer before uni ( tbf he’s an august baby) and wasn’t ready to take test before he left..didn’t take test till following summer. Youngest failed 3 times and very on/off on lessons around exams…much easier to pay for days /weeks while they were actually learning.
We continued to not routinely put them on insurance once they could drive. Just too expensive. We’d just do a day here and there when it was needed …rest of time they walked, had lifts or public transport. My eldest still doesn’t have a car (lives in london) , I put him on mine occasionally when he comes to stay …but generally he enjoys sitting in passenger seat and criticising my driving and flinching 🤣🤣🤣

I appreciate it was more expensive proportionately /relatively but it was about cash flow. We simply couldn’t afford that £2000 plus layout . Doing a bit here and there when absolutely needed was easier financially for us

I added them both onto my car as an additional driver and then let the insurer know when they passed their test.
To an insurer a learner is lower risk than a newly qualified driver so the insurance will be higher after passing.
Shop around. I found direct line cheapest for one DC and a couple of years later admiral were cheapest.
If they have own car and are students try Endsleigh.

As PPs say. It's easy to shop around now, using Compare the Market & the like. The other thing that gets the price of new drivers' insurance lower is having a black box fitted on the car.

I used Veygo and did a pay as you go type thing, so a few weeks at a time. All different options to choose from.

Then when we passed the quote to add her to my car was so much it was cheaper to buy her her own car and then it was about £800 insurance on that. Plus she built up no claims bonus in her name which is important.

Happytodayhappytomorrow · 19/02/2022 16:12

thanks for all the posts. We decided to do the insurance in my name plus learner insurance. I got a much cheaper quote for the learner insurance too (with Marmalade)

Not all car insurance policies let you add learner driver, ours didn't

Please help..two insurance companies have quoted for learner insurance (my son) with two named drivers (my husband and I) BUT neither of them (Admiral and Direct Line) want to quote for once he passes his test…hinting that it might be one and a half times more!

My husband is frustrated that they are refusing to quote but, in the meantime, what have others done? Any advice on what to do to keep insurance costs down? Please help…

Admiral multi car insurance for us. It wasn’t as eye-wateringly expensive as I feared. Possibly because DS was a bit older than expected when he passed, due to pandemic-related delays.
