Investing in art

I own a few bits of art from established artists. Cost approx. £1000 each from reputable local galleries. Bought them because I like them, but are they a worthwhile investment?

Would anyone advise investing more in art?

I know nothing about art but I have read several articles over the years about people buying original Rolf Harris pieces only to discover that they are now worthless. I would think to be successful at investing in art you need to do a fair bit of research.

It's a real gamble. Art is subjective unless of course they are a hugely established and well known artist, in which case £1000 won't go far. You'd be as well looking at auctions, seeing what's coming up at the next sale and researching the artist, seeing what prices they fetch. Galleries will have their own large premium on top, plus potential deals in regards to print numbers and reprints etc.

I collect art, but it never occurred to me to see it as an investment. So, I don’t really know how you could predict the market for any of it, it might be worthless in 20 years, I’ll still Iove it.

I invest in art but spend a bit more than you on each piece. What is important is that you like it because like anything it could go out of fashion so you have to enjoy the piece as the value could go down. If you are buying pieces for £1k it's unlikely that they are highly sought after and/or very limited editions so it doesn't sound like a great investment to me. You would be better off buying a single piece for more than many pieces for 1k

I had a valuable painting! Took approx 4 years to sell it so don’t bank on it being a readily available cash investment!

Thanks everyone.

I've bought pieces I like and also to support artists and I get so much enjoyment from them.

Would've been good to think they would also increase in value but perhaps not
