Opting out of Rishi Sunak's "rebate" + reporting it as illegal

Apologies if a thread already exists but I couldn't see it.

I don't want the "rebate" which isn't a rebate. It's a loan. I haven't asked for a loan and I haven't signed an agreement.
I want to write to my MP to ask him to pursue the option for people to opt out.
I want to report to the Financial Ombudsman as it's not following legal channels.

I am pretty sure something's been on twitter about both recently but can't see anything obvious. Can anyone help point me in the right direction, please?

It's not a loan to you, it's a loan to the energy companies. If anything write to your energy company to tell them you don't want it.

You cannot do this. Or, at the least, even if you do not take the £200 you will still have the 4 x £50 levy added to future bills to "pay it back".

Every account that exists in Oct 2022 gets £200. Then every account gets £50 debited each year for four years - regardless of whether that account existed for the original £200 credit and regardless whether they got the £200 or not.

Comefromaway · 08/02/2022 11:30

It's crap.

So dd who is currently living in a house share of 4 people will get ONE £200 credited. But if when she graduates they all move out and all find their own flats they will each be debited the £50's.

ButterMeTimbers · 08/02/2022 11:31

Yep. Sad

correction: It's £40 for 5 years, not £50 for 4 years (my error).

Retisestress · 08/02/2022 11:37

So how will this work for house shares ?
What happens next year if people cannot pay their bills plus the £50 payment.
This government are just lurching from one bad decision to another !
Cap the fuel companies instead !

It's another "back of fag packet" cock up by Rishi and The Treasury.

Just like all the foul ups with the covid support grants leading to 3 million people excluded who got bugger all, and millions of others claiming grants they didn't need or weren't entitled to.

Someone needs to get a grip in The Treasury as it's clearly being run by incompetents.

Martin Lewis has put up a short video on MSE which really explained it well for me. From next year, they are adding £40 to every electricity bill so there will be an offsetting system of paying in and taking out over several years. It is obfuscating something, likely a stealth tax...not sure exactly as it is early days.

Winebottle · 09/02/2022 20:40

They make up their own legal channels so it won't be illegal. It clearly isn't in the remit of the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Write to your MP if you don't like it. Your energy company and Ofgem will follow the rules the government has come up with.
