Currently work 28 hours a week compressed over 3 days. Drive to work is about 10 mins or less depending on traffic. Parking free. I can WFH if I like 2 out of the 3 days. Do you think that it would be cheaper to WFH (with the increased heating/electric/water/sewage costs) or drive to work and use their heating/electric/water.sewage/coffee/tea/milk etc)?

You'd only save a lot not driving to work if you can get rid of the car if you do. 10 mins drive is 10 miles maximum, so £2-3 petrol a day tops, so about a fiver a week saving if you WFH 2 days.

I've WFH full time for nearly 2 years now and I don't think we've used that much extra heating, maybe 2-3 half hour boosts in the daytime in the winter. Laptops etc don't cost much to run and our water is unmetered.

Tea and coffee doesn't cost enough to start counting really and you'd have to consider if you'll buy lunch out if you go to an office as that is likely to cost far more than lunch at home.

In short, it's probably about the same either way within a quid or two a week, so I'd just do what you like best/is better for work.

How far is your office in the 10 minute drive - is it walking distance? You could treat your commute as your daily exercise if it's no more than 2-3 miles a day and walk it. Then you'd definitely save a little cash.

Id be at my work. If you can work remotely it means they could replace you with someone from anywhere.

BarbaraofSeville · 03/02/2022 15:22

Well it depends on what the job is. If the OP has a shortage qualification it's often not a matter of being replaced, because there are more jobs than people that can do them.

Also think about clothes - if you’re WFH two days a week will you need less office clothes/shoes? That will also save a bit.

I have a very specialist qualification so no chance of replacement.

I have thought about walking but then I’d not see my kids much on the days I walked - I may do a trial run on the weekend to see how long it takes as that would be good for daily exercise
