Hi everyone

I've been awarded dla for my child but I've just found out another diagnosis for her . Do I inform the dla department and how does this affect my money that I'm getting now . This is new to me as only been claiming for 2 months
But was told the new condition yesterday

Dla is not awarded on diagnosis. It is awarded on the child's needs. So have her needs changed? Does she need more input/support from you because of the diagnosis.

I'd imagine if the award was made 2 months ago nothing had actually changed you just now have a name for what is going on.

I would if you get lower rates as may help
Raise them. If you already get higher rate then not really worth it although you could write a letter just to let them
Know so can’t be accused of not telling them. Generally they only care if it somethings that means they pay less

What level of award are you getting? Does the new diagnosis change anything I how you care for her practically?

Leeanner1494 · 29/01/2022 00:29

Hello thank you all for replying , basically she has been diagnosed with cerebral visual impairment, she already has to wear glasses due to other needs . But she will need extra support at nursery , and extra support from me as she can't see from the waist down . So only can see what I front of her basically

It really depends on what level she is getting. There are 3 levels of care and 3 of mobility. If she's getting the highest level in both, it won't make a difference. If she's not, it's worth telling them

unicornsarereal72 · 29/01/2022 07:55

But did you already make dla aware that she has visual problems. It doesn't matter what the problems are. Have her needs changed since the assessment not just a diagnosis. Are you now doing more for her because of them? When you were assess and awards the claim did you mention that she is visually impaired and what you have to do for her because of it.

It is very unlikely they will reassess 8 weeks after the first assessment

Also as previously mentioned if you are on the higher rate there is nowhere else to go with your claim.

Leeanner1494 · 29/01/2022 10:36

She's on middle rate and yes the problem she has could co-exist with autism , I see the orthopic every 2 months cause she's has problems with her eyes . I did mention she could have visual impairment but it's been diagnosed that she has defo got it . And yes I am doing more for there than I should . She is only 3 years old . X

Yes but are you doing more now than you were 8 weeks ago when you were assessed?

Leeanner1494 · 29/01/2022 11:34

Yes . I wasn't assessed from the dla department I was awarded cause of my evidence I provided and explained what's going on

The forms do say to let the DWP know of any changes. A new diagnosis is a change.

By far the easiest thing to do is to let the DWP know about the new diagnosis and if there are any changes in care needs. I'd not write that her care needs had not changed because of this, simply because you don't know the full extent yet as it's early days, but I would say if there were changes to her care needs because of this new diagnosis.

When my DD had DLA, she had a CT scan which showed something. We received a single sentence letter from the neurologist, so I copied it and sent it to the DWP and they wrote back and said that meant her award had now changed to indefinite, because of that new diagnosis.

Leeanner1494 · 29/01/2022 12:10

Ok thank you I am waiting for a letter for the orthoptics letter to come through with her new diagnosis so I'll contact dla on Monday to let them know what's happened now x
