Deceased person's tax return

DH died in June. He was a higher rate tax payer and always completed a tax return. It's possible he did the 20/21 return before he does, he was always very prompt, but I doubt it as he was very ill by the end of the tax year.

I haven't done one door him since he died? Should I have done. It's the news about today's deadline that has made me think of it, it didn't occur to me before. He usually got a rebate when he submitted his return so it's possible there's money due to his estate.

Also for this tax year, he will have overpaid as he only worked (was on full sick pay) for 3 months.

What do I need to do? Do I need to do anything?

Yes. You need to file a tax return for 20/21 and then 6 April 2021- date of death. Depending how long it took for processing the estate (his stuff), and if there were any earnings in that time (interest, rents) you may need to file an estate tax return too.
Any tax adviser will help you.

Unfortunately yes
When my father passed, they told me not to worry too much about the timing of the return. That might have changed though but generally they were lovely.

What I ended up doing was giving them the only info I had within a few months, then by the end of a year or so I had full info. But they said not to be worried if anything new came to light, just to let them know.

There's a number about half way down this page that might be right for you

I'm sorry you're going through this Flowers
