..and I should start using my dishwasher and washing machine every other day to reduce the bill!
He also told me that if the average family(two adults and two children) used their appliances everyday like I do then their bills would be this high.
Please can you prove him wrong? How much is your electicity bill per month and how often do you run your washing machine/dishwasher/tumble dryer?
We have asked them to come and test our meter, but they are charging us £39 if it is working correctly.

nope, i wish!

just a rather pokey 3 bed semi unfortunately!

WendyWeber · 31/12/2007 21:31

That can't be right - ours (3-bed terrace in Lancs, based on rateable value) is £27 a month - there is no way a small 3-bed semi anywhere can be 6+ times that!

Def contact your water supplier and argue it!

Bubbaloo · 31/12/2007 21:41

Agree with WendyWeber. We live in an average sized 3 bed house and our water rates works out to £33pm.
£170 can't be right,surely.

nodder · 31/12/2007 21:48

Our gas and Electricity comes to a grand each a year. Which works out at 85 quid a month each.

LIZS · 01/01/2008 08:58

agree our Water Rates used to be about £240 pa for a 4 bed . It does vary by area (which company is it?) but not to that extent. We used to get billed twice a year but if we missed the first payment then it was all due.

Helennn · 01/01/2008 12:53

Our water rates would be about £400-£500 per year, (we are on meter so not sure how much it has gone up), for a 3 bed semi also. We live in South West Water area which is one of dearest in country and house worth about £250,000 so not cheap. So, £170 per month, (4 times ours), sounds wrong.

Maybe you could talk your landlord into putting a meter in. I think if you are not happy with it you can have it taken out within a set period. Tell him it will put you off renewing the tenancy as it has such high water bills.

We pay about £110 per quarter on a meter and do not stint!

Sick to the back teeth of utility companies messing up family finances! Had a huge bill 3 years ago which I disputed and had meter checked etc. Ended up paying £199 a month to clear it.
Been paying £100 a month on lec for about a year and have a credit of £150. Now had a letter putting my monthly payments down to £5. (Yes, a fiver.) There is no way I'm having this and have told them so. Going to compromise at £60 a month.
We are big users, they know this, it's so stupid of them to suggest £5 a month.

Elphaba · 01/01/2008 13:13

Our electricity is £93 pm and our gas is £135 pm - this is only because we started off paying too little per month though.

We don't have a dishwasher but our washer and tumbler are on much of the time!

Haven't read all the posts so not sure how big your house is - I'm guessing it's very big if it's £270pm!!

Electric underfloor heating can be a killer - when we put it in (just in the bathroom) our electricity bill pretty much doubled. Check your meter readings in one 24 hour period with it turned on and then with it turned off and see if it is that that's doing it.
