Council tax, rent

DD is the only non student in her house so is liable for 75% council tax which is nearly £200 a month.

Her lease runs until July. However she has been offered a job nearer us and will probably start in March. Obviously she wants to limit her liabilites as much as possible.

Can she pay off her lease in advance and ask to be taken off the lease now? Would this stop her liability for council tax.
If she is still paying rent but not living there is she still liable for council tax? Does this make her landlord liable even though the only people living there are students?
She has been told she cant sublet her room by the landlord, so that is not an option. It is a student let and they are all moving out in July.

My son had this in Reading and as he was still in the lease had to pay the council tax. I would ring up tbh and ask. However I do think it was ridiculous. Two lots of rent and council tax and a large flat empty.

if the house is let to other students - no her landlord will not be liable for the ctax.

id say the best course of action to take is to find out from the council tax department themselves what they want to prove she no longer lives in the property and is no longer a tenant - explaining to them what you've explained here

However I do think it was ridiculous - its down to the district councillors in each area as to how they apply the rules - if your unhappy with this then speak to your local district councillor, they need your vote to remain in power to make these decisions.

@ivykate the local councillors are there as representatives, they don't make the day to day decisions, its paid officers who do that. If you wanted to dispute a decision, one route would be to go via your councillor at that point.
If she can provide proof of the end of tenancy it should be ok, but it sounds like her tenancy runs beyond her move out date.

pisspants. the district councillors do make the decisions as to whether to have a payment break for 3 months on an empty property or not - on our area they voted to stop it and reduce it to one month and then voted again at a later date to stop the payment holiday all together. They do make these decisions as its their role and why they are voted into the position
