Anyone fixing electricity tariff right now ?

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 20:57

I’m already with Octoous and they are offering a loyalty tariff - but its 27% higher than my current one !

Money saving expert says anything less than 40% more then currently pay is a good deal . Seems so much ! Anyone else fixing ?

I'm going to go onto the standard variable rate for now

FourTeaFallOut · 14/01/2022 21:13

Yes, I'm one of the high use customers with Scottish Power who was offered a fix at the current cap+42% for 2 years and took the deal. So that's £280.

It has £0 exit fee, so I can ditch and run if it looks like I've been stitched up when they set the new cap rate in February.

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 21:16

So hard to know what to do isn’t it ?

Yeah mine has 0 exit fee too so will move if need to !

FloatyBoaty · 14/01/2022 21:18

Mine increased by 50% but they’re a green supplier I like overall, and the original bill was quite modest,so took it.

Alarming though.

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 21:20

The standard fix octopus are offering is 80% higher than my current one !!!

We're with octopus too, fixed rate is ending Feb. Also read the Martin Lewis advice. Think we're going to go onto the variable rate. The cost is capped by govt until March or April isn't it. Then the weather will be warmer so using less. Hopefully prices will calm down by the autumn or winter so can look to fix then.

Belle96 · 14/01/2022 21:26

Im with octopus and have fixed, like you up the end of Feb payments havent changed but thats because im in credit. Making the most of having the heating on.....

FourTeaFallOut · 14/01/2022 21:26

The current cap remains in place till April 1st. They decide the new cap in February but it doesn't kick in till April 1st.

Belle96 · 14/01/2022 21:28

Also I know you're saying the government has capped until that point but due to my line of work I know what's coming. I would fix now. The variable sounds good at this point but lock your prices in now and get saving. Everyone is going to suffer

FourTeaFallOut · 14/01/2022 21:29

Do you think there will be an increase again in October?

Yeah that’s what I thought when I saw the standard fix octopus was offering . Really scared me as I do trust what they (and ML) say

I'll be chopping some extra logs then!!

I've taken a fixed rate with EDF. I think it's got a £15 exit fee. I don't like the uncertainty of a variable rate.

Op just noticed you said electricity in the title, did you mean gas or have I been talking rot 😁

Serena2016 · 14/01/2022 21:45

Oh @Indecisivelurcher my central heating is electric (new build )

OP posts:
Elzbells · 14/01/2022 21:46

I'm with EDF and paying £136 a month now. To fix for 24 months the best deal is £460!!!!

I'm sticking with variable which is currently £160 per month.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/01/2022 21:47

I missed that. I do not have a £270 electric bill - that's gas and electric for me!

Hmm I didn't know electricity was going up... The stuff I've seen is all about gas. A quick search and I see electricity going up too. Bugger.

FourTeaFallOut · 14/01/2022 21:57

I'd chew their hand off for that, op, that seems very reasonable.

I have an electric car that I charge from home so my energy costs look a bit ridiculous at first.

OMG I bet!

Mine went down hugely when I switched to octopus from sse

I really really like octopus esp as they ask for a monthly reading

About 50% of GB's electricity is generated by gas fired power stations, so the gas price affects electricity too. The real time fuel mix data are at electricityinfo.org/real-time-british-electricity-supply/ for those as sad as me and interested in such things!
