Travel Insurance and our Skiing Holiday

Hi,

My son has broken his wrist and is therefore not going to come on our Skiing trip.

Our travel insurance company has said that they are unlikely to pay out as technically, as his legs work, he can board a plane and travel to our destination.

As he has to have an operation and will be in a cast for at least 6 weeks, I am trying to find out if our doctor will advise against travel, in which case they would accept our claim. Otherwise nothing.

Does anyone else have experience of this and is it worth me arguing this?

Thanks alot

He would need to hold on a ski lift wouldn't he, and put boots on, maybe you can point you out to your Dr so he sees a one handed skiing trip won't be possible.

I think they mean that he could still come with you, but not ski - basically sit in the chalet and read a book etc.

Would there be any issue with cabin pressure causing his arm to swell in the cast? How much for a private doctor to write a note if your
GP won’t?

Great points, I will raise and look into them all, thanks very much

Yes , Speak to the doctor and also the surgeon . They maybe able to do a letter advising it is not wise to travel. YOu can also argue back that You son was going to ski as it is a skiing holiday and he cannot ski with a broken arm . IT used to be the case that unless the break was a simple one that the cast was cut / split during travel It was 48hrs after being placed on but every situation is different. I would argue as insurance is in place precisely for situations like this.

I think you need medical opinion advising against travel not skiing. Unfortunately it would be the same if it were a beach holiday and he could not go swimming in the sea. Technically he can still enjoy the time away.

Certainly an avenue worth investigating, it’s usually only a 24/48 hour restriction but it’s worth further research..

yes this. I will need a friendly doctor to say he can't travel. TBH have written the money off but still peeved. He is not a reader, or a watcher of tv, he can't ski, board, sledge or use the pool, sauna or jacuzzi.

I have managed to get the grand total of £330 refund on the hotel, nothing can be done re his flight.

How old is he? If you cancel flight you may be able to reclaim taxes if over 12. Is your current loss much more than the policy excess?

Iamblossom · 13/01/2022 13:56

Went through travel company so they booked flights, they said they can't pay out any more than the £330

He is 15.

Excess is £150, holiday costing in excess of £6000

That is total obvs, for 4 people, not his portion

OP posts:
LIZS · 13/01/2022 14:19

Is 330 if you all cancel or just him? Presumably it is % of package cost based on cancellation terms. How much is the difference for his place?

Iamblossom · 13/01/2022 16:33

It's 330 just for him. the other 3 of us are still desperately hoping to go
