Am I being silly?

To cut a long story short I have been feel very undervalued but my employers lately. I've probably felt it for a few years but this last year even more so.
I have been with them 7 years and do a brilliant job. My boss regularly gets calls and emails and letters giving the most amazing feedback on me. However I am never considered for promotion. They always employ new staff for a job I already do 90 percent of. For context I work part time 32 hours a week and this isn't favoured by the company. Until I give them more hours I won't go anywhere (this was said as a joke but I cant help but feel there is truth to it).

Most recently everyone got a pay review. Everyone but me got a healthy payrise of a few thousand per year. I got 20p per hour! My employee benefits are also half of all my colleagues. Christmas we had a bonus. Once again mine was £200. Everyone else got £1000. Every year it's the same. Everyone else gets gifts from the company. I dont!

I feel it is impossible to approach this subject but I feel so undervalued its made me hate my job.

I am looking for a new job but am I being silly for feeling upset?

No you're not being silly, know your worth .

savvy7 · 05/01/2022 21:30

They are taking the mick

Totalwasteofpaper · 05/01/2022 21:31

Yes you are being silly to be upset because no one will care.
Find your anger and a new job.

Needanewadventure2021 · 05/01/2022 21:31

I thought so. It's making me not want to go back

New job time!

BumbleNova · 05/01/2022 21:34

Why the heck are you putting up with that?!

You need to leave!

Needanewadventure2021 · 05/01/2022 21:38

Its not easy to walk into another job though.

I dont have a choice but more and more is coming to light. And I don't feel I can address it. I ended up in a row with my boss before Xmas as I found out about everyone's pay rises and I got 20p an hour.

I suspect it's because I am part time

Speak to ACAS as this is potentially unfair treatment under the part time
Workers prevention of unfavourable treatment regulations.

You totally don't deserve this attitude! But I learned also if you continue to take on all the work and make it look like it is normal then they don't notice actually how much more you are taking on- end result job is done, and done brilliantly and that is it - they think it is your job it is nothing special - unfortunately this becomes a norm and it is not fair! Time for you to have a one to one with your line manager and raise this- good luck

Changemynameffs · 05/01/2022 23:51

Have you worked out of the 20p per hour is pro rata the same as a full time employee on 40 hours per week at 1k per year?

Needanewadventure2021 · 06/01/2022 04:31

Rises were between £2 and £3.30 and hour for others. This is why I was shocked at 20p. Historically our company has paid extremely poorly and as a result in 12 months has lost 11 people of the 21. But it's not just pay theres lots of other stuff too

If you're wanting to leave anyway, there's nothing to lose in raising a grievance. As above its illegal to treat part times unfavourably - fine to pro-rata bonuses and pay rises but it doesn't sound like that's what's happened here if you work 32 hours.

FlowerArranger · 06/01/2022 08:38

32 hours is almost full-time!

RosesAndHellebores · 06/01/2022 08:51

Do you do exactly the same job as others. Are your titles JD's the same? What does your contract say about benefits for part-timers and potentially discretionary bonuses?

Comparisons need to be forensic and measured and getting into a row will not have helped. Set out your concerns in a constructive way and ask for some clear feedback whilst not straying into feedback territory.

You say 11 of the 21 have left over the last year due to pay. That means better paid jobs must be readily available and I would be minded to take that option, going full time if necessary.

Bearing in mind the above, can you reflect carefully about the message you are being given here and potentially the reasons for it.

It's a difficult situation op but I think you need to have an open and honest discussion with your employer and identify whether there is anything you need to do to justify an increase in pay as well as establishing why there has been a variance. If there is no discernible reason for the variance and I would recommend you focus your energy on looking for a new job.

If it emerges they have done this because they want you to leave set your anger to one side and negotiate a good reference and some professional outplacement advice.

It sounds very difficult but I don't think channelling negativity will help you for the future. Draw a line and reach for a happier cloud.

Needanewadventure2021 · 06/01/2022 09:32

Yes but these jobs are not what I do. The staff that have left are operatives and drivers. I am the only one who does my job and it's of a technical sales nature. I do 90 percent of the sales staff job anyway so it doesn't make sense why the salaries are so different. During furlough my pay was just under 800. The next closest furlough pay was 1800.

As someone has said 32 hours is not that far off full time so even with pro rata pay the difference is huge

Do you do the payroll admin? Because you seem to know a lot about everyone else’s pay rises and bonuses.

If everyone - regardless of pay - got £1000 Xmas bonus and you got £200 then I think you’re on a hiding to nothing. There’s nothing subjective about your role or market worth in that. Based on that, I would say that you’re never going to resolve it, unless you’re prepared to have it out with your boss. (sounds like a small to medium size form without HR?)

Why not call their bluff and ask to go full time into the sales role at the higher wages? The extra hours plus the higher rate would cover childcare. Can you do the role? I used to do 90% of our sales team role, but the 10% I was bad at, was negotiating the price up - so it was an important 10% that I was bad at 😉
