Tax - not sure

Hoping someone can clarify. I work part time, one day a week. So far I have not had any tax taken, presumably because I am under the threshold of £12570 per year. I am about to increase my hours to almost full time. Then do I start paying 20%?

You’ll pay tax if you earn more than £12570 in the year to 5th April 2022.

What are the details and I’ll work it out for you if you can’t.

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 27/12/2021 17:35

It will depend on how much you earn. If you go over the threshold then you will be taxed. Without knowing your whole circumstances it's not possible to be exact

Porfre · 27/12/2021 17:36

Depends how much you'll earn.

But they may take extra in as tax until April, cos they'll assume you've earned that such the whole year in your pay. Any extra you pay, you should the money refunded by HMRC.
I would receive a cheque in the post a few months after.

Rubytinsleslippers · 27/12/2021 17:43

Thanks. I work about one day a week but have done extra but stayed below the tax threshold. My additional hours will start in February - and I wondered if I am under until April then I'll only be taxed from April onwards or if they will tax me straight away? ( Hope that makes sense ). I've been on the wrong tax code before and ended up repaying a huge amount of money over years - which is all paid off now but it has left me very anxious! I don't want any mistakes! Even though it was my previous employer who had me on the wrong thing...I had no idea.

If you’re on a cumulative tax code then you won’t be taxed until you go over the tax proportion for the year.

If you’re on a M code you’ll get £12570/12 per month and anything over that would be taxed.

It’s really a lot easier if you give some details!

S1257L. This is my tax code...

Your last payslip likely shows details:
Gross Pay - how much you were paid that pay period
Gross Pay To Date - total this tax year
Tax Paid To Date - total this tax year
Tax Code
Pay Period
Your payslip may call these things slightly different names but they are the totals needed.
If paid monthly, November is pay period 8.

WouldIBeATwat · 27/12/2021 17:59

That’s a cumulative code. S means Scotland.

Will you have earned more than £12570 by the 5th April?

Rubytinsleslippers · 27/12/2021 18:06

Yes, I haven't been paid anywhere close to the threshold so think even if I start extra in Feb I should not get taxed until the April. I've paid no tax or ni this year yet.
Thanks for all your help. Just nervous that I do something wrong.

nannynick · 27/12/2021 18:12

NI you will start having deducted when you earn £184 per week / £797 per month.

JohnSmithDrive · 27/12/2021 18:33

Your tax code looks right, so you don't need to "do" anything. You'll pay tax at 20% on the portion over £12570.

JohnSmithDrive · 27/12/2021 18:35

Oh, actually I think in Scotland it's a bit less for the first £x over £12570, but as the tax code is correct it should just happen automatically.
