Holiday disaster insurance claim

Hi all,

I want advice on whether to proceed with an insurance claim to recoup costs of flights after what are a series of events which I worry make our claim look fraudulent.
Basically we were meant to fly to Europe last weekend to see family for 4 days. My son got a fever the day before, we spoke to the GP, they advised PCR test which meant we missed the flight. As luck would have it my husband then tested positive for coivd the next day! So it's bloody lucky we didn't go.
I've already started the process with the insurance company, all fine so far.
My husband then came to me today saying he had an email from ryain air to say our flight was cancelled ...in January, the Muppet had only gone and booked our return journey for a month later by accident.
My question for anyone who has knowledge of this is whether we can claim for our outgoing flight and other expenses such has lateral flow tests seeing as the holiday was only meant to be 4 days not a month. We obviously weren't insured for a month. I told the insurance company our return flight was 4 days later, which wasn't true.
Ryan Air cancelling the flight means we do get a refund for the return journey so I guess that's lucky! Obviously we won't claim for the return journey now.
But if I was the insurance company I think this looks really dodgey. Like it looks like we realised we booked the wrong return journey and fabricated an illness with our son. I don't want to get refused a claim and a black mark against us for future insurance.
Advice welcome please!

I had to make an insurance claim last year and was only repaid for specific proven losses and had to provide evidence for all of it. Before being paid out I had to get proof from the airline that the flights did/did not go and in the first instance pursue the refund from the airline for the flight that was cancelled. Likewise accommodation. So I think your claim might be ok as you won't be claiming for the return flight as it was cancelled and will be refunded separately?

I think I've watched too many of those insurance fraud TV programmes and I've got paranoid haha. I'll ring them today and just explain that my husband is an idiot haha. So lucky that we're getting refunded though!
