Child/working tax credits

I've not earned the taxible amount yet this year but have been part time with two agencies and have been paying a lot of tax (so if I earn £285, after pension contributions, ni and paye from one job I would get £198ish - the other job I'd get £220ish) I only work two days a week and it alternates between which agency I work for.

My tax credits had been calculated to say I'd be working up until the end of the tax year, but I am stopping work now to start maternity leave. I didn't have enough time to claim maternity allowance in time to coincidence with my stopping as I was told I could carry on but covid has changed the rules again so I've had to stop now.

As I'll be off for over 6 months, I will have to reapply for the agencies so effectively Im unemployed now.

My question is, do I update on government gateway to say I've stopped work on both jobs? I can't face calling them for advice as I read another thread which said the wait time was over an hour. If I say I've stopped work, will that adjust my credits? Also it's a joint claim. I worked it out thay I should get an additional £40-50 or so which isn't much but will be so appreciated.

Hope someone can help and this makes sense.

Also, as I'm pretty sure I've overpaid tax, will this automatically be rebated at some point and when?

I haven't got it in me to call the number and if its automatic I think I'll appricate a little lump sum when it does come through

I'd say to call closer to closing time in order to get through quicker.
tax rebate should be sorted in your final pay due to real time updating with HMRC

Have you had p45's from the agencies if you are effectively unemployed?
The PAYE ^should& be sorted out automatically by HMRC, but after the end of the tax year and it may take some time.

Thank you. I don't mind if the paye I may be owed takes some time to come through.
Should I ask for my p45s to be generated now? They will mark me as unemployed by them after I've been of for 6 months.

I'd stay on the books, in that way you haven't left so are just on maternity leave and the tax credit link I gave earlier applies.
You'll then get a P60 following 5 April, and HMRC will do a P800 calculation on your income for the year and you should get your refund after that.

Chasingsquirrels · 21/12/2021 23:28

A P60 from both employments I mean.

OK thank you. I will phone them and tell them then. Thanks for your advice. I don't want to get things wrong by mistake.
