Stay on a variable or switch to a fixed rate that is the question?
Variable rate currently £131 a month but fixed rates are £200+
What to do..... 🤷🏼‍♀️

How much you’re paying doesn’t equate to how much you’re using over a full 12 month

Mine would £120 monthly but I’m not using that amount if combined electric and gas in the summer

I m now using £30 per week as it’s winter - but the utilities are clever and would have me paying that amount all year round

Then they can use the money interest free

How much is your daily tariff and unit charge for both electric and gas?

For example my electric is 23p per day and 19p per unit on a variable rate

The fixed rate you’re looking at - how much is it?

I looked at fixed rate with EDF and it was 27p per unit and 24p per daily tariff

Hi StickyStickyStickStickSong, Take a look at octopus variable tariff. If you go via my link, we will both get £50.00 each.

If you do decided to join Octopus, via my link a big thank you.
Octopus are a very good company. They have things like spin the wheel every month where you can win money. You get two goes if you have dual fuel. I haven't won anything yet!

Martin Lewis has some good impartial advice about this on his website

MSE says don't go onto a fix yet. Especially with the changes due in April- in the summer your usage will go way down and prices are based on current usage in the winter.

LargeProsecco · 22/12/2021 17:05

I'm just off the phone to Scottish Power with a similar situation.

Have been phoning in my meter readings monthly & paid £200 for latest bill, based on that.

But they want me to set up a DD for £400.

Told them where to go on that one!

Seems ridiculous to be paying double my actual usage - especially for meter readings done in the winter.

Not sure what the solution is though - have airways paid monthly by DD & it seems odd to be paying by card monthly.

dementedpixie · 22/12/2021 17:08

I think advice is to go onto the standard variable rate as its covered by the price cap until its reviewed in April. My fixed rate ends in January and I'm not going to choose a new fixed rate as its much more expensive than the variable rate price

LargeProsecco · 22/12/2021 17:14

That's the conclusion I came too as well @dementedpixie.

I bought a new flat in September which had electric heating. Then put a gas boiler in November- so being treated as a new customer.

Such strange times. Am nearly 50 & never experienced anything like it. Always had DD & costs calculated on actual usage.

missbunnyrabbit · 22/12/2021 17:19

My fixed rate runs out in January and I'm going to stay on the company's variable rate. It's cheaper than the fixed rates at the bottom and there's the price cap.

missbunnyrabbit · 22/12/2021 17:20

At the moment * not at the bottom!

dementedpixie · 22/12/2021 17:23

These are the 3 rates I was offered. Hmm which to choose?!
