Hi, can I get advice please on if there is an app or bank account which has a system similar to old style money envelopes?

DH and I need a joint account which we can top up weekly and which has "envelopes" inside it for:
Groceries
Travel
Eating out
Kids DLA

We already have a joint account set up just for monthly bills, so we're looking for an account to help us track all the other spending. Income is very low at present so we've got to run a tight budget on a weekly basis and simply stop spending once an envelope is empty.

I looked at Monzo but can't tell from their website if their pots do this or you have to pay for it as an extra feature?

Thanks in advance.

I use hyperjar, pretty pleased with it

Feelingpoorlysick · 09/12/2021 22:21

I have a basic tsb account which has the option of saving pots

boringaccountant · 09/12/2021 22:37

Monzo have pots as standard :) they're great.

@Happyface120 thanks for the recommendation, can you somehow choose which jar the money comes out of for each purchase you make?

Starling has "spaces" which is just like Monzo's pots.

Another vote for Monzo. Bloody brilliant for saving and seeing where you're spending money. Something us accountants clearly like!

You can link the hyperjar card to any jars (ie paying for petrol- link it to petrol jar and then revert back to wallet). I don't think you can do this with either Monzo or starling. However, there is a limit as to how many bank transfers you can do in a day with hyperjar.

Monzo now has 'virtual cards' which you can link to pots and use online or with Apple Pay (I assume Google pay too). It might just be a feature on their paid for accounts but it's only £5 per month. Also not 100% it's on the joint accounts as I only use a personal one

I use starling bank and have set up 'spaces'

No limit on how many you can have

Revolut

Starling bank account I love it. Main current account available but then you can move money into 'spaces' so I have birthday, bus, hobbies, holiday etc to save money into and you can make instant transfers between the current account and space.

Megan2018 · 11/12/2021 08:09

Monzo is great for this.

YesILikeItToo · 11/12/2021 08:21

YNAB (You Need a Budget) app does this. It is expensive, and needs a little explanation, but extremely slick once you’re up and running with it. They have thought of everything, I doubt you could be running any system of accounts/credit cards that can’t be accommodated in their approach.

Another vote for Monzo! I have lots of pots. I also like the 'round up' feature. If, say, you spend £2.80 on your card, it's rounded to £3 and the extra 20p goes into a pot. It's amazing how quickly that adds up.

itwasntaparty · 11/12/2021 08:29

Monzo

I love YNAB too- I found out about it on here years ago and find it incredibly useful. If you have a good Google you might be able to find a 3 month free trial. I love it.

Hi all, old thread alert!!!
I am interested in Starling. A friend showed me her statement but it only has one balance? How do know how much you have on each pot or space by looking at the statement?
