Heating by day or night ?

I always have my heating on at night as I hate a cold bedroom. My heating is set to 20 degrees at night and in the day I turn it off and it can dip to around 18 ish but I don't mind so much in the day as I can put a jumper on. Am I doing this all wrong in regards to saving money/energy?

My heating is off at night. Why would you need it at 20⁰C if you are under the covers?

You would save money by having it off at night or even set to a lower temperature

Are you electric or gas?

I believe that gas prices are the same whenever you use them, whereas electric has peak/off peak/economy 7 etc dependant on your tariff.

Cocomarine · 29/11/2021 09:46

Your choice. But, if you actually do want to save money and energy then it’s a waste to have heating on all night when you can easily just use a warmer duvet.

So, you heat the whole house to 20, to stay in one room? It's not particularly efficient.
That said, if the house only drops to 18 over the following day, it sounds pretty well insulated.
Why dont you try heating it, say, 10pm-midnight and 5am-7am?

I would feel ill if i had heating on during the night...what an utter waste...my heating is on during the day and switched off before we go to bed.

Dougieowner · 29/11/2021 21:54

Heating goes off at about 8:30-9pm but rooms stay plenty warm enough until bedtime.
At night the bedroom retains the heat plus we have a decent duvet so no need for heating until up and showered.

In my opinion you are definitely wasting money heating the whole house just so the room where you sleep under a warm cover is toasty when you are asleep and wouldn't notice anyway.

i have my heating on a timer. 5am-7:30 in the am so the house is warm when I wake up and getting ready. Then 5pm-8 in the evening so it's warm when I get back from work and house is heating enough till bed time. No point having the heating overnight, you won't feel it as you'll be asleep and it's money wasted.

my heating is off at night- only on freezing nights will it kick it for an hour here and there- utterly wasteful if adequately clothed under the covers. In fact heating at night gives me a headache and makes me sweat,

Appiandterri · 30/11/2021 15:10

Our heating is on at 15-16 max-over winter. We have an extra blanket or throw on if it’s really cold.

Day time in the middle of winter we set it astound 20 but turn it down to 16-18 f it gets really warm. We wear jumpers & slipper socks.

I’d feel ill in a stuffy, overheated bedroom all night.

megletthesecond · 30/11/2021 15:12

Mine is on 20° overnight too, 24/7 actually. I tried, and failed, to sleep in a cold room.
It also means laundry can dry off nicely.

Helpstopthepain · 30/11/2021 15:17

I can’t have any heating in the bedroom, it makes me feel unwell. Instead we have an extra duvet!

We try not to use our oil heating and instead light our log burner (not very eco friendly I know) when we are at home. The radiators might go on for an hour after school but that’s usually it. We all wear jumpers and big thick socks.

None of this is to save money, it’s just what we like.

Violet9 · 30/11/2021 15:25

I hate a cold bedroom too, but seeing as the rest of the house doesn't need heating on overnight I just have an electric oil filled radiator in the bedroom that I have on. Set the thermostat to a comfortable heat (I don't like the air too dry either!) and nice cosy bedroom Smile

saleorbouy · 01/12/2021 13:01

Invest in a better duvet and electric blanket and turn off the heating at night.

aradicalnotion · 01/12/2021 13:22

I feel the cold pretty badly but wouldn't have the heating on at night, what a waste! We have an extra duvet that we use when it starts to get really chilly and I invested in some alpaca bedsocks Grin It's not good for your sleep quality to have a too-warm bedroom.

namechange30455 · 01/12/2021 14:31

Our bedroom was 15 degrees last night and I was too hot under the thick duvet. Would it not be cheaper to just get some warmer bedding?!
