Amazon not accepting Visa Cards.

Really unhappy about this. They will accept debit cards but I have no wish to do this as I only use a credit card online. They will accept Master Card but Barclays exchanged my dh’s Mastercard for a Visa some time ago. Does anyone else have this problem?

Nope don’t even own a credit card

CherieBabySpliffUp · 18/11/2021 18:34

Yes, I've had to change the details to my current account. According to Money Saving Expert they are meant to be giving us a £20 voucher if we have Prime and a £10 voucher if you don't have Prime but I didn't get it so 🤷‍♂️

TakeYourFinalPosition · 18/11/2021 18:58

Barclays have a pretty good debit card chargeback scheme, as do most banks now…

But it’s visa that have caused the issue, by hiking rates now that we’re out of the EU. If they won’t budge on it, I don’t think Amazon will be alone on stopping accepting them.

Biscuitandacuppa · 18/11/2021 19:00

I thought that the change wasn’t coming in until January?

CherieBaby Sorry to be so dumb but do you mean you gave them your bank details so like a direct debit ? Or do you mean you gave them your bank direct debit card? I am sorry you haven’t got your £20 reward! You could go on their chat line as I have found them helpful and usually sort things out.

There's a big long thread about this in one of the other topics with a lot of information. I don't remember where read it but it should be easy to find on a search

CherieBabySpliffUp · 19/11/2021 19:25

@HappydaysArehere I changed the payment details from my credit card to my current account. Where each month £7.99 would be charged to my credit card it should now be charged to my current account (in theory) I guess I will find out next month.

MrsFin · 19/11/2021 19:36

Several banks have ditched Visa recently. First Direct and Santander to name but two.

Ha, ha. Clever thinking CherieBaby. Hope it works. It should do. In theory yes. Hope it also works for purchases. Surely, if it was going to be rejected it would do so when you put it in as a replacement.

Amazon and Visa have clearly been negotiating behind the scenes, haven't resolved it and Amazon have taken a decision and gone public. Now a PR war blaming each other, and both hoping public opinion will force the other to back down. Which one might, so it's possible it won't happen, or will be short-lived if it does.

whatnumber · 20/11/2021 10:27

These changes aren't coming in yet.
My company deal with credit cards. There are high fees that you cannot pass directly onto the customer. Amazon are not happy about swallowing these costs.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 20/11/2021 10:30

I wouldn't worry yet, they will sort something out. This is all part of their contract negotiations.

claymodels · 20/11/2021 10:37

It's not really a problem - you could get a Mastercard or use debit card or just not use Amazon?

Nobody has to use Visa

Brahumbug · 21/11/2021 06:57

You can also use PayPal credit which functions like a credit card and gives section 75 protection.

Yes claymodel I looked on the internet and found several Mastercard providers. I found my bank did a Mastercard credit card although our debit cards with them are Visa. So applied on line last night and hopefully get it soon. Just didn’t want another card as been using my dh’s second card he got for me. However, thinking I should have my own as we are at an old age where we realise soon one of us will be on our own.

Visa debit is still fine to use

GiantKitten · 21/11/2021 11:26

Visa will see a lot of their income going to MasterCard if they don’t back down.
Place your bets Grin

GiantKitten · 21/11/2021 11:28

I’m very reluctant to use debit card because of hacking risks. I know you can get money back in those circs but I don’t know how long it takes.
Hanging on here until January deadline.

What are the hacking risks with debit cards that don't exist with credit cards?

GiantKitten · 21/11/2021 11:50

Hacking risks are no greater, but they can spend your bank balance and overdraft if they get into your Amazon account & leave you with no cash.

LindaEllen · 21/11/2021 11:58

If you use Amazon regularly you could buy Amazon giftcards from the supermarket on your credit card. Say a couple of hundred quid or whatever, then you'll have it in your account to use as and when.

Our business debit card has been used fraudulently twice in the past year. Both times, we received our money back within hours of it leaving our account. They're really good at getting it back for you, so don't worry about that.
eightlivesdown · 21/11/2021 12:58

I wouldn't assume that because one hacked debit card was quickly refunded by one bank, that all debit cards hacked will be quickly refunded by all banks. They might be, but prevention is better than the cure.
