Life Insurance refused... history of self harm and suicide attempts

Has anyone successfully got life cover with a significant history of mental health admissions and suicide attempts? All the major companies (Aviva, LV, AIG, Legal &General) won't insure anyone who has self harmed more than 5 times regardless of how long ago, even 25 years ago)

Been told Scottish Widows are very good at insuring people with pre existing and complex health history?

They were in a terrible place due to traumatic bereavement but have made huge progress, no recent history and just want to protect their family.

Try Legal and general, they asked me if there were suicidal thoughts or self harm in the last 10 years, as there had been in the past.
According to a compare site L&G insure people others don’t.

Oh sorry, I see you’ve tried them.

Maybe go to an insurance broker and let them search?

Changes17 · 17/11/2021 18:54

Maybe find a specialist mortgage broker - they tend to already know what each insurer's attitude is.

We have been to a broker, still being turned down.

What I would like to know is has anybody been accepted with a significant pre existing condition for Life cover? If so, who with and how expensive is it?

You can't compare costs with any one else as life insurance policies are unique to the individuals circumstances including age/gender/smoking history as well as medical history. You should be able to find a company that will insure but have a clause that states if the death is due to suicide that the insurance won't pay out.

I have to have counselling following a bereavement and my insurance did not cover me for this self inflicted in the first 12 months. Ours is with aviva via a broker.

My cover is with Royal London, and just has exclusions for mental health related conditions. Arranged through a broker- maybe try a different broker?

I have a relative with fairly uncontrollable bipolar and multiple suicide attempts - they got cover with Legal and General; although I believe it excludes suicide and some other mental health related conditions. Are you looking for something without exclusions, or are they declining outright?
