Grandmother's will, doesn't seem right

Jazzhandedintrovert · 13/11/2021 18:42

My grandmother died and my father was executor of her will. I haven't seen him for years as he was my abuser. He sent me a very curt facebook message to tell me my grandmother had left me £500 so I gave him my details and he transferred it. I have since seen the will and it says that I should have all the money from all her savings accounts except her current account, as well as all her stocks and shares. She was a very shrewd woman and it seems utterly implausible that she died with only £500. My father is ruthless and has history of screwing family members over financially. Does anyone please have any advice for how I could find out what happened? Thanks in advance, it's so upsetting, I feel sick thinking about it.

I would advise speaking to a solicitor.

HelloKittySkittles · 13/11/2021 18:52

Are you saying the money was transferred from your fathers account?

DGM left us all some money and the solicitors issued all the cheques from £3,000 up to £20,000. I think you need to contact the solicitor who dealt with the will. How did you finally see the Will?

Jazzhandedintrovert · 13/11/2021 19:03

@HelloKittySkittles yes, it was transferred from my father's account, no solicitor involved. Another family member was concerned that my father may have been dishonest so requested to see a copy of the will from the probate registry, then contacted me about it.

@CreepySpider yes I agree, the only solicitor we have spoken to says we need to find out a bit more first, but I don't know how.

See a different solicitor!

Ask solicitor to write to your father for final bank statements.

RagamuffinCat · 13/11/2021 19:33

Did he send you £500 exactly? It would be odd that the money from those sources would add up to such a sum.

HelloKittySkittles · 13/11/2021 19:35

Maybe you could speak to another solicitor? It’s not as if you could contact her bank and get her final bank statements & not everyone can see the accounts.

Post in legal rather than money matters, you might get info there.

Thank you very much for the helpful replies. It was the family member who spoke to the solicitor as they are trying to protect me - thinking about my father makes me physically ill, and I'm not sure whether the stress of dealing with it is worth the health costs. I think I'll seek advice from my own chosen solicitor. (I'm not sure of my way around these forums and couldn't find a legal section, hence posting in here!) Thanks again.

I struggled to find it myself!
Here’s a link to the legal board if you want to post there

It is a legal requirement of the executor to provide a statement of the deceased’s estate to each beneficiary, so I would approach a solicitor and ask them to request that on your behalf. They can also request copies of the savings and stocks and shares statements to be included.

Snuggledupforwinter · 14/11/2021 08:46

The monies should have been paid to you from her probate account (executor of ... written on any cheque). It is odd that he gave you exactly £500, although could she have cashed in her shares etc to pay for care? Do speak to a solicitor asap.

SolasAnla · 14/11/2021 08:59

@HelloKittySkittles no bank will provide the OP with another person's bank data. The executor is only given access as they act on behalf of the person who died.

@Jazzhandedintrovert sorry for your loss🌻

If you have a copy of the will and your father's bank account drtails you could also get the solicitor to contact the banks Anti-Money Laundering section to have them investigate the source of funds in your father's account. They will not communicate the outcome with your solicitor but may freeze the money from the estate.

HelloKittySkittles · 14/11/2021 10:38

I know @SolasAnla that’s why I said It’s not as if you could contact her bank and get her final bank statements

Apologies I some how missed the whole start of that line "It’s not as if"😳
StrongTea · 14/11/2021 11:07

I got a copy of my dad’s will, Scotland, so had to apply to court if I remember correctly. There was a list of assets along with the copy of will.

Pumpkinsonparade · 14/11/2021 11:09

Imo your mh will improve when you rightly fight to receive what your dgm wanted you to have. Scum like your df need put in their place. He is an utter thief...
