Does anyone use Hyperjar? I have some questions!

One of the main issues we have with giving the DCs pocket money is forgetting each week, or not having any cash on us. So I thought Hyperjar would work. I've set up an account and added two kids jars, but can't see a way to set up a recurring payment to the kids jars. I want to be able to transfer a certain amount a week to each DC's jar so I don't have to remember.

If this isn't possible, how do others use it? The DCs can't have their own accounts as they're under 16.

I guess we could just set up bank accounts for them but then there is the danger of going overdrawn, etc.

You have to bank transfer the money, so I assume you'd be able to set up a regular standing order?

Lalallama · 13/11/2021 17:46

Thanks, I can set up a standing order to move money to main Hyperjar account, but then I have to remember to manually put it into each of the kids jars each week. There doesn’t seem to be a way around this?

I use HyperJar.
I always found their customer service chat and FAQs quite good for explaining things.

My daughters have accounts with Nationwide which are for 11 - 17 year olds. They can't go overdrawn. Most other banks also offer a similar accounts for children. Do your DC fall in that age bracket? Could you consider that option?

userisi · 13/11/2021 17:56

@Lalallama oh sorry yes I see what you mean, I manually move it. I just do it on payday once a month so I don't forget!

titchy · 13/11/2021 17:56

They can have their own bank accounts and they won't be able to take them into overdraft.

Get them bank accounts! If they're teens they'll be able to have a debit card.

Authenticcelestialmusic · 13/11/2021 18:04

As others have said You can set up bank accounts for them from the age of 11. Natwest, nationwide, Lloyds etc. They can’t go overdrawn. Just get them normal bank accounts.

Lalallama · 13/11/2021 18:05

Ah thank you all. Yes they're both over 11 so I think a bank account might be best. I hadn't realised they can't go overdrawn. I guess the only issue is we have no sight of what they're spending it on, but they are quite sensible and we can stop paying into it if needed. Just had a quick browse and the Santander mini one looks quite good.

Now need to work out how to move the £5 I put in Hyperjar back into my account so I can cancel it!

Coincidentally, I saw this video last night and thought it sounded like a good account! She talks about allocating spends to her boys’ accounts.

SummerSazz · 13/11/2021 18:12

I know nothing about Hyperjar but my dc have bank accounts with phone internet banking (I think Apple Pay is safer than them carrying a card to pay for the bus etc). I can then look at the account on their phones at any time to see what has been spent. It's obviously retrospective but is some level of oversight.

mylittlefidget · 13/11/2021 20:45

You can schedule regular payments from your wallet. Just click on schedule when you set up the first payment

mylittlefidget · 13/11/2021 20:46

We got our oldest daughter a NatWest account but will definitely keep the younger two on hyperjar, because we can see exactly what they're spending their money on.

Lalallama · 14/11/2021 08:41

@mylittlefidget thank you, that was exactly the thing I was looking for! The link to Schedule is tiny, no wonder I missed it with my old eyes.

So we have a couple of options, might get a bank account for the oldest but use Hyperjar for 11 year old DS for now.

So questions part 2...

Anyome used this in France? I was wo dering about putting some money on it for a holiday and keeping it separate from our account/move onto it from my phone so not so bad if we lose it etx.

ShipwreckSunset · 23/06/2022 17:23

We have recurring weekly payments set up for DC on Hyperjar, used this over a bank account as younger child not eligible. It pings up on my phone when we they use card to spend.

AMalloy73 · 18/08/2023 16:50

I asked Hyperjar about this, and you can setup scheduled payments as follows (you just need to ensure you transfer money from your bank account to you main Hyperjar, which should be easy enough with a Standing Order);

Make a new payment > Pay from > Pay to > Amount. Now tap 'Schedule' and you can choose to make a one-off Scheduled Payment or a weekly, monthly, or yearly recurring payment. You will then be able to choose the day the payment/ recurring payment takes place, and the duration of the recurring payment. Now tap 'Confirm Schedule' to review the details, and tap 'Confirm Schedule' again to complete the Schedule Payment setup.

From the Payments Tab, you are able to tap on any Scheduled Payment you have set up. You can view the details of the payment, and by using the buttons on the top right-hand side of this screen, you can easily pause, re-activate, or edit your Scheduled Payments. Also, at the bottom of the screen, you have the option to delete the Scheduled Payment.

Terrible Terrible bank card.
Unable to withdraw from ATM.
SO MANY online transactions declined.
UNABLE to use at Fuel Pump pay station.
Lastly, started to add charges that weren't agreed when I first opened the account.
NO interest.

Customer service were not helpful & hard to contact.

Would not recommend AT ALL.

My DC use their HyperJar cards abroad, and the good news is no foreign transaction fees. They’ve used theirs in France, Italy, and the US.
