Cop out Christmas gift

I’m prepared for the backlash Grin but does anyone else agree that cash as a gift for Christmas is a cop out. Find out what they would spend £X amount on and get them that.

OP posts:

No
This morning I bought 20 money wallets from the card factory.
I have 20 nieces and nephews and 9 great-nieces and nephews.
I'm not going gift shopping for that lot 😜😜
They prefer money.

DrFoxtrot · 13/11/2021 12:46

Cash is better than things that people may not want that just clutter their house.

ramonaquimby · 13/11/2021 12:47

It’s not a cop out. Lots of teens (and others) prefer cash to get something they choose and want. It’s like cash for wedding presents, I never understand the fuss about not wanting to give cash

I’d say if you’re the kind of person who thinks in terms of “cop outs” then just buying what they’ve asked for surely is equally a cop out? 🤷🏻‍♀️

It’s fine: no present agreement, cash, voucher, gift list, surprise present… all say, “you are someone I am prepared to consider at Xmas”. Which is rather nice.

Don’t try to force your way of doing things on other people!

wtfisthatspiderdoing · 13/11/2021 16:48

I'd rather have cash than a 'thoughtful personal' handmade soap/jam/pickle shitty hamper or whatever other crap people hand make give and think that because it's handmade it's wanted by everyone!

ithoughtisawapuddycat · 13/11/2021 16:50

I give cash to my godson as there's no way I'd try and guess what a 13 year old boy wants. He normally puts it towards a computer game or new trainers.

😂😂 Me too.
MrsFoxyplease · 13/11/2021 16:58

My dc's gifts from us are looking a little paltry as due to their ages the stuff (tech) they wanted for Christmas is expensive so if anyone is wanting to gift my dc this year I'm hoping it's a present that is wrapped that I can add to the gifts under the tree from us.
I do think though that when they get to teens they prefer cash.

AuntieMarys · 13/11/2021 17:03

It's a perfect gift for teens and adult children. My adult dcs live 250 miles away, they want money as they both have new homes. They've had cash as their main Xmas/ birthday gift since they were 14 or 15.

JumperandJacket · 13/11/2021 17:04

Fine for a child, not for an adult.

FallonCarringtonWannabe · 13/11/2021 17:04

I get my dc lots of presents. They always love getting money from other people too.

That just made me choke on my G & T. So true 😂😂
noitsnot · 17/11/2021 11:15

What are money wallets??

firstimemamma · 17/11/2021 11:21

It's not a cop out at all if you know they'll need the money for something in particular. I'm giving 2 engaged couples money for their wedding funds and a couple in our family money for a special holiday they've got booked for next year. I know this will be much more appreciated than buying an actual thing for the sake of it.

Alpinechalet · 17/11/2021 11:22

@noitsnot

Money wallets are essentially a card with an internal pocket to hold cash, cheques or gift cards. They are easy to make.
flirtygirl · 17/11/2021 17:07

Cash is king.

SirenSays · 17/11/2021 17:21

Unless cash is asked for I think it can be a bit thoughtless. Better than vouchers though which are fecking daft imo.

123rd · 17/11/2021 17:28

Why spend £20 on Tat, or something they will Chuck into the charity shop pile. I'd rather my kids were given cash that they can then use towards something they want /need

HolidayTime2021 · 17/11/2021 23:25

Most gifts are TAT and destroying the planet.

This ^ 100%
I MUCH prefer cash to pointless gifts I don't want.
I keep all cash gift in a separate purse and use it to treat myself to something I actually want that I couldn't justify spending that money on, for myself. Usually something that I wouldn't expect someone to spend that much on me, or sometimes on something like a ticket for something that I'd rather get myself for a particular day that suits me, or that might only be released when it isn't my birthday or Christmas.

RJnomore1 · 17/11/2021 23:51

I agree completely OP.

Cash is just a transaction not a present and I hate being given it, im really easy to buy for, at least try to look like you made an effort.

worriedatthemoment · 17/11/2021 23:55

18 and 16 year old only really want money or vouchers as they have own taste in clothes
People tend to buy a selection box or smellies or socks to go with the cash
I try to buy presents for younger kids and adults but teens / early adults cash is often best

Yes. Get them a Boots 3 for 2 gift set with deodorant in it- that says that you made an effort.
HeddaGarbled · 18/11/2021 00:47

I would give cash to teenagers and young adults but not to other age groups.

When my son was about 5 he gave his grandad £10 in a card as he thought that was the best gift ever

Grandad was 70 and had never been given cash before. He spent it on a pint in the pub with a friend and was delighted. (he is a very rich man)
