Security risk?

I have been trying to sell my car with Cazoo.
When setting up the payment info I’ve been asked for my customer, internet banking, number and date of birth..
I wasn’t happy to do this without checking so went to the bank and they told me under no circumstances do I give out my customer number.. There is no reason at all they should need it...
Surely Cazoo is a large company Who are covered by the fsa..they wouldn’t be allowed to ask for details if they pose a security risk...
What am I missing?

Direct bank payments are different to giving them your log in details.

You sign in to your own bank account using a secure portal and select an account for them to pay in to.

The attached picture is from the Cazoo website.

I can understand your hesitancy though. Maybe contact your bank to double check that this particular portal is considered safe by them?

Thanks. That does make a bit of sense but on the actual payment page it asks for more info... I did show the page to the bank and they were adamant that I not do it.. she even checked with the manager..

You could use autotrader, you don't need to provide details like this.

Could they be signed up to Open Banking? That allows approved organisations to share banking details and presumably is allowed and secure.

Otherwise, it seems weird that you have to log into your bank via their platform to get paid. Why wouldn't you just give them your account and sort code on a piece of paper? That's all they need to pay money into your account.

Sounds like an odd way for a large company to operate but you'd have thought that they would do things correctly and if not, that they would have been pulled up on it long before now.

So I’ve just had the same question as I reached this step and it raised alarm bells for me. Did you go through with it? How did it work out for you? X

Log onto my online banking via a third party provider webpage?

Hell no, not for me thank you.

I don't care how genuine they are, my only interaction is directly with my banks web page on a know browser.

I’ve gone ahead and went for it after checking the FCA registration number for the intermediary platform and reading a few articles about it online. However it didn’t ask me for any additional details like my date of birth or account number. Just logged me into my bank’s page to authorise which accounts I was happy for them to see via open banking and told me what details they’d see. We shall see! Will update here if I encounter any problems.
