Universal credits - are they paying me too much

I normally work part time & my husband full time. Currently on unpaid leave part of maternity leave and struggling to get by. Applied for universal credits. Husbands wage, £1800-£1900. I'm currently receiving £0. I have three children but it says they are paying some towards the first two. Mortgage over £700. I was expecting maybe £200. What they have said today is they will be paying me a little over £1000. Don't get me wrong I am absolutely thrilled with this I was struggling to get by with less than £30 a week on food until I return to work in December. Is this right? I don't want to have to spend it and have to pay it back.

I didn't claim during my other mat leaves as I did not realise I could. I still have a credit card from where I struggled with my second child 🙈

They will ignore £515 of earnings - a work allowance as you have children and no help with housing costs. After that reduce UC by 63p for each £1 earned (a taper). The Chancellor announced that the work allowance and taper are becoming more generous - about £40 more allowance and 55p taper, not sure when

Sounds like the £1000 is the figure without deductions. I have worked out that on net pay of £1900, you should receive £156.94 Uc per month.

Babyroobs · 03/11/2021 12:46

@CoastalWave

You won't get any if my experience was correct.

Husband lost his job so zero income. I earn £1200.

We received nothing. Our household bills are £2k before we even eat.

I just can't see how if you bring in £600 more than we do, you'll get anything sorry.

I might add, they did initially pay us. 3 months later they said they'd overpaid us by £900 and could they have the whole lot back. Just warning you!

Maybe you have less kids than op, or you have savings ?
Babyroobs · 03/11/2021 12:47

Op it sounds like your dh's wages haven't been deducted? Is it a new job?

TulipVictory · 03/11/2021 13:20

@Babyroobs yes as of September

Ok so maybe your partners first wages were reported after your Uc assessment period end date in which case they wouldn't be counted ? that could be why you will receive your full Uc this month with no deductions. What are your assessment period dates and when was your partner paid?

TulipVictory · 03/11/2021 21:23

@Babyroobs Assessment period: 1 October to 31 October 2021. He was paid the 25th

Ok so his wages should definitely have been counted unless there has been some problem with his employer reporting them late. I would give them a call.

Babyroobs · 03/11/2021 22:05

if the last day of your assessment period is 31st October, then I assume your payment date is 7 th November , meaning you will receive payment this friday as if payment date is on a weekend you will receive payment on friday. I would try to call them before then to try to get it rectified.

TulipVictory · 04/11/2021 10:22

@Babyroobs I phoned them and they just told me to put a note under payments on the journal 😬

No saving and we have 2 kids.

Honestly, UC are worse than WTC and that's saying something. PERSONALLY I wouldn't take anything if you can live without that £100 odd quid they might be offering you.

I can 100% guarantee they will want it back. You couldn't actually PAY ME now to sign up to either of those services!

Babyroobs · 04/11/2021 13:37

I would stick with it. in a few weeks the taper rates will be reducing so you will get more money from UC. Sounds like this is a glitch and your partners wages may have not been reported properly or on time, which is not the fault of UC.

You get help with rent. Those with mortgage like the OP can only ask for a loan to help with mortgage interest.
AnotherEmma · 04/11/2021 15:23

According to my calculation you should get £177.21/month. Very close to MrsGeoWolf's calculation, all the same figures except the deduction for "excess earnings" is £852.28 (£1352.84 x 0.63).

Do you have any childcare costs? Presumably not while on maternity leave?

unluckyinlife · 23/11/2021 20:54

I take home 1600ish my husband brings home around 1900 our rent is 1450 we have 2 children and we are entitled to something like £11 a month.
