Working and child tax credits

Hi I was wondering if anyone can help me on an unusual situation. I renewed my tax credit claim and was awardees a notice in September. I started a part time job in April but I haven’t been paid until yesterday. It’s family so I wasn’t concerned about not being paid. It’s a new start up business and so I wasn’t given an exact number as to what my total wage would be. Therefore, I hadn’t informed HMRC, which I now can do as my payslips have been created. Does anyone know how hmrc will deal with this as I’m guessing I’ll need to pay back the overpayment as we are now over the threshold for working tax and child tax will also be reduced? Thanks

Hi OP, just saw this as I’m in a similar situation. Did you have to pay a lot back?

Pension contributions are disregarded from income for tax credit purposes. Pay the excess into your pension, and you should not fall foul of the overpayment rules, and should not have to repay anything.
