Inheritance Question

Hello

So a relative of ours unfortunately passed away earlier this year and we have been lucky enough to to be included in there will as a beneficiary.

We’re not sure how much we will be getting however do know it will be enough to secure a deposit on a house which I know is what they would of wanted us to do. I do know probate has been granted and the sale of the house has been completed. However I was just wondering if anyone knows roughy how long it will be before we would be likely to receive anything.

We would like to begin the search of looking for a house however of course do not want to do this until we have a deposit secured.

Thanks

House sale is usually the last thing the executors have to do before distributing to beneficiaries.

MaisyMary77 · 27/10/2021 18:08

Sorry for you loss.

When my DH’s father died interstate the whole process was surprisingly quick. Once it was determined that it was DH and DSil who were the beneficiaries, everything was divided up 50/50. The money from the house sale came through as soon as the funds had cleared. All in all, about 6 months.

As your relative left a will, I think the funds will come through pretty quickly after the completion of the house sale. Happy house hunting. 🙂

Thank you, I forgot to mention it’s being dealt with by a solicitor so not sure if that has any bearing on time length. I know the house sale is completed this week and pretty sure there is not much left after that to sort.

Are the solicitors the Executors as well? Not unreasonable to 'chase them up'

Leelee888 · 27/10/2021 19:10

No they are not the executors. That’s is a relative.

Once the house sale has completed then I'm sure you should be getting the money very soon, I would contact the Solictors tomorrow and find out what's happening.

MajorCarolDanvers · 27/10/2021 20:06

Its quite acceptable to drop the solicitor an email to ask for an update.

Leelee888 · 27/10/2021 21:50

A relative is the executor however don’t like to seem I’m chasing.

Don't be shy, just ask. Or you may never know. Are you close to this person, do you actually care what they think of you? It's your money not theirs.
Ohpulltheotherone · 27/10/2021 22:17

If the house sale is nearing completion then it really wouldn’t be long before the executor will have the final estate balanced and should actually start executing the will.
It’s hard because you don’t want to seem to be a moneygrabber but at the same time you are entitled to know what you are receiving as a beneficiary,
You could look up the will online - if you think that it will name the amount? It won’t help if it says something like 20% of my estate but if you haven’t seen it then it’s only 1.50£ to get a copy online?
Essentially your choices are - ask executor, look up will (although that won’t speed up the process but may tell you the amount or sit and wait and hope they get on with it!

Leelee888 · 27/10/2021 23:14

Thankyou, we roughly know the amount hence how we know it’s enough to secure a deposit on a house. It’s more about now how much longer is left. We are just thankful to be in a position to now afford a home however don’t want to seem chase or seem like were pushing however would also like to start looking at buying ourselves.

You could politely ask the relative saying you need to get your ducks ina row so you can be ready after Christmas when the new houses come up for sale.

How close is the relative?

I'm in contact with the relative who is also the executor however as they have gone through the solicitors to complete probate currently it's been handled by them. The house sale was completed yesterday so there shouldn't be much more to do. The solicitor did request our address last week. Could this be to send a cheque out or would they pay out via bank transfer?

If they asked for your address last week then they are poised to pay - they need to make sure that are no more bills to be paid from the estate before the final settlements. We received a cheque for an inheritance from the solicitor with an accompanying letter - you might want to keep this handy as evidence that your house deposit is legit and not laundered.
