Hiow and why do debt "management" companies contact you?

Tow annoying phone calls from two Indian call centres from two different people (claiming to be from two different companies) with fake English names in the same morning, offering to "help" with debt.

They didn't understand the only question I was interested in asking them, which was how our number ended up on their database, and if they could please remove it.

Could be random phone callas, but I'm a bit that they should call at a time when we are sorting out money management issues.

Just a pre-Christmas scattershot cold-call? Or chould I suspect something more sinister?

That's two. 2 calls. My typing is going fishy today.

we get at least 2 maybe 3 a day. I tell them to F* off and put the phone down. Used to be more polite but then they just keep you talking longer trying to persuade you.

NineWurlysDancing · 11/12/2007 11:22

oh and meant to say, have no idea why they keep contacting us, we are not in debt, yes we have a mortgage and one (small) loans but no credit cards or other debts.

mishytoeandwine · 11/12/2007 11:24

Probably just coincidence. Is your number listed in the directory?

Have you considered TPS (telephone preference service) where companies who cold call are not allowed to ring you?

UnquietDad · 11/12/2007 11:25

We're not in the directory - will look into TPS, thanks.

Doesn't stop overseas calls/dodgy semi-legal ambulance chasers sadly...

You can tell the (pretensions to being) legit firms:

THEM 'blah...blah...'
YOU: 'Telephone Preference Services!'
THEM: 'Oooops! Sorry'

Instead of telling them to f off and hanging up. Insist that your tel no is removed. They must comply with this (in the UK anyway).
If they ring after this then tell them to F right off
